Requirements
  • An associate degree in animal husbandry, agriculture, or a related field and three years of work experience directly related to the area of employment are required; directly related work experience may substitute for the associate degree on a year-for-year basis.
  • A veterinary technician certification may be used in lieu of the required years of experience.
  • A bachelor's degree in animal husbandry, agriculture, or a related field and four years of work experience directly related to the area of employment are required in the additional minimum requirements; directly related work experience may substitute for the bachelor's degree on a year-for-year basis.
  • Certification in an animal care technology field may be required for positions overseeing the care of laboratory animals.
  • The role requires knowledge of animal anatomy, anesthesia, euthanasia, veterinary supportive care, biohazard containment, chemical hazard containment, risk-reduction measures, research processes, IACUC-approved protocols, and animal welfare regulations.
  • The employee must be able to work with animals, wear issued personal protective equipment, work in dusty or wet environments and confined spaces, and understand safety requirements for autoclave rack washers and tunnel washers.
  • The employee must routinely lift 50 pounds above the waist and meet the listed physical, sensory, respiratory, and environmental requirements.
  • The employee must work 40 scheduled hours per week and may be required to work weekends, after-hours, and holidays.
Responsibilities
  • Perform daily clinical rounds, follow-up treatments, emergency and critical care, and post-surgical care for laboratory animal species involved in research protocols.
  • Provide backup to Surgical Research Laboratory Veterinary Technicians by performing perioperative and intraoperative care for animals undergoing anesthesia and surgery.
  • Administer species-appropriate treatments under department protocol or standard of care and the direction of staff clinical veterinarians.
  • Collect species-appropriate samples using appropriate techniques.
  • Calculate drug doses and administer supplemental fluids to laboratory animal species.
  • Maintain accurate medical records and complete clinical records in compliance with departmental and federal regulatory standards.
  • Ensure timely follow-up of clinical cases by DLAR veterinarians.
  • Ensure treatment sheets and databases are accurate and up to date.
  • Follow up on rodent clinical cases by email with DLAR veterinarians and research personnel.
  • Provide technical assistance during procedures.
  • Perform euthanasia for terminal procedures.
  • Provide training to DLAR and research personnel in rodent handling, restraint, and injection techniques.
  • Complete other duties as assigned.
