Democratic Governors Association

View

The Democratic Governors Association (DGA) funds and supports Democratic candidates for state governor races. It acts as a campaign engine by pooling resources for governorship contests, providing funding, advertising, and policy consulting to its candidates. It also serves as a policy forum, hosting conferences where current governors and candidates share best practices on state issues. Since separating from the DNC in 2002, the DGA has focused on raising soft money and coordinating efforts to win key gubernatorial contests. Its goal is to elect Democratic governors across states and influence state-level policy through coordinated strategy and resources.

What believers are saying

  • DGA raised over $112 million in 2025, its biggest haul ever.
  • February 2026 spending funded dozens of staffers across swing states.
  • Thirty-six governorships are on the 2026 map, including Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin.

What critics are saying

  • DGA paid Whitmer aide JoAnne Huls $52,500; ethics scrutiny hit in August 2026.
  • Record fundraising still concentrates power in a few donors and volatile first-time givers.
  • If 2026 governor losses stack up, DGA loses recruiting leverage and policy influence.

What makes Democratic Governors Association unique

  • DGA is the only national committee dedicated solely to gubernatorial races.
  • Andy Beshear leads 2026; Gretchen Whitmer serves as vice chair.
  • Women Governors Fund raised and spent over $120 million since 2018.
