Camping World shares fall 35.6% to $4.45 as flat sales and $2.40B debt raise concerns

Camping World's stock has fallen 35.6% in six months to $4.45 per share, partly because of softer quarterly results. Analysts at StockStory say investors should be cautious about the recreational vehicle retailer. They cite three concerns. Same-store sales were flat over the past two years, pointing to weak demand at existing locations. Earnings per share fell 67.5% a year over the past three years, faster than revenue. The company's fixed costs made it hard to adjust to shrinking demand. Debt is also high. Camping World owes $2.40 billion against $224.1 million in cash, and its net debt is 8× EBITDA of $283.1 million. The stock trades at 13.3× forward earnings, which the analysts say means a lot of good news is already priced in.

Camping World further lowers outlook, closes four dealerships.

Camping World further lowers outlook, closes four dealerships. October 19, 2026 Camping World Holdings, Inc., in a regulatory filing, lowered its guidance further than the reduction outlined in reporting second-quarter results due to continued weakness in the RV channel. The RV retailer also said it's accelerating cost-containment efforts, including undergoing unspecified layoffs and closing four dealerships. Full-year 2026 adjusted EBITDA is now projected to be below the low end of its previously communicated guidance range of $230 million to $270 million. On July 29, when reporting second-quarter results, Camping World lowered its 2026 guidance to a range of $230 million to $270 million from $275 million to $325 million. Camping World said in the Securities & Exchange filing, "The company's current outlook takes into account a broad range of potential outcomes amid continued uncertainty regarding macroeconomic conditions and RV industry demand." The company said that as noted on its second quarter earnings call, combined new and used vehicle unit sales softened sequentially in July and have remained soft through the third quarter, contributing to a more promotional environment for new vehicles across the RV industry as competing dealers worked to align inventory levels with weaker demand. "Although the company has seen unit sales declines progressively moderate to a degree during August and September, new vehicle front-end margins have remained under greater pressure than previously expected," Camping World said. "In addition, certain macroeconomic factors impacting the guidance, including movements in energy prices and interest rates, have become less favorable, further pressuring the company's near-term demand and vehicle margin outlook." In response to these conditions, Camping World said it has accelerated certain elements of its previously announced $100 million of SG&A savings and operating efficiency initiatives. The company has identified and implemented additional headcount reductions expected to generate at least $50 million in incremental annualized savings, intended to improve operating leverage, support margins and strengthen cash flow. These actions include the closure of four dealerships, two of which the company currently intends to reopen at a later date. The retailer, which has about 200 locations, said, "The company expects to enter the fourth quarter with a more streamlined cost structure and ongoing initiatives intended to enhance profitability and cash generation." Camping World further said it is exploring the refinancing of its existing term loan facility with the goal of increasing the company's financial flexibility. The company is considering a range of possible refinancing alternatives, which are expected to include new term loans and other senior secured debt. Image courtesy of Camping World

CarMax beats Q2 estimates by 8.2% with $8.01B revenue as vehicle retailer stocks slip 1.6%

Camping World reported Q2 revenues of $1.93 billion, down 2.1% year-on-year and missing analyst expectations by 2.5%. The recreational vehicle and outdoor merchandise retailer also missed full-year EBITDA guidance significantly. The company's stock remained flat following the earnings announcement and currently trades at $6.04. Camping World was one of four vehicle retailer stocks analysed for Q2 performance. As a group, these companies missed revenue consensus estimates by 5.9%, with share prices declining an average of 1.6% since reporting. CarMax performed best amongst peers, reporting revenues of $8.01 billion — up 6.2% year-on-year and exceeding expectations by 8.2%. Its stock rose 17.7% post-earnings to $61.34. Vehicle retailers face challenges from online competition whilst maintaining importance in a fragmented, localised market where cars remain essential purchases for consumers.

Camping World writes down $13.1M in assets as RV margins collapse despite higher prices

Camping World closed the second quarter with 200 locations, down just one from a year earlier. But the retailer booked $13.1 million in long-lived asset impairment in the quarter, up from zero the previous year, signalling it's writing down properties that won't recover their investment. The company sold $67.6 million in real estate in the first half whilst spending only $1.4 million buying property, reversing the prior year's $72.4 million outlay and $9.8 million in sales. New RV unit sales fell 16.4% to 22,312. Average selling prices rose 13.6% to $38,950, but per-unit costs climbed 17.4%, squeezing new vehicle gross margin to 10.9%, down 286 basis points. Used unit gross profit dropped 22.3% to $4,810.
