Requirements
  • Completion of an accredited Physician Assistant program and current licensure or eligibility for Physician Assistant licensure.
  • Completion of an accredited Nurse Practitioner program and current licensure or eligibility for Advanced Practice Registered Nurse licensure.
  • For Adult Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioner or Adult Nurse Practitioner certification: experience managing stable chronic disease in adult patients or a primary care setting.
  • For Family Nurse Practitioner certification: experience managing stable chronic disease or providing primary care across the lifespan.
  • Current Basic Life Support certification.
  • Current Advanced Cardiac Life Support certification.
  • DHEC and Drug Enforcement Administration license applications must be started before the first day.
  • The provider must maintain applicable licenses, certifications, continuing nursing education or continuing medical education, and other credentials required by policy and state law.
  • The role requires the physical ability to stand, walk, sit, bend, kneel, climb stairs, reach, use both hands and legs, perform repetitive motions, qualify for respirator use, maintain corrected 20/40 vision, work in a latex-safe indoor environment, and lift, push, pull, or carry objects weighing up to 50 pounds unassisted.
Responsibilities
  • Provide longitudinal care for patients with advanced aortic disease, including maintaining a panel of patients under preoperative and postoperative surveillance.
  • Take comprehensive histories and perform physical examinations.
  • Evaluate and treat patients using history, physical examination, radiological, laboratory, and other diagnostic test results within the practice agreement or scope-of-practice guidelines.
  • Perform wound care, including changing wound vacuum-assisted closure devices, changing wound dressings, and debridement.
  • Perform ultrasound-guided compression of pseudoaneurysms.
  • Perform thoracentesis in accordance with approved procedural privileges, skill, and proficiency.
  • Manage chronic hypertension, lipid disorders, and renal failure.
  • Perform surveillance and imaging interpretation for patients with chronic aortic disease and appropriately escalate cases to the surgical team.
  • Coordinate complex perioperative and postoperative aortic surgical care.
  • Make rounds on admitted aortic patients at least once weekly and potentially see patients in the emergency department.
  • Initiate referrals to other healthcare providers and consult attending or collaborating physicians.
  • Document and bill for direct care provided.
  • Communicate with referring physicians, primary care physicians, supervising physicians, patients, and care teams.
  • Use current research and evidence-based decision-making in clinical practice.
  • Participate in quality and performance improvement activities and clinical research.
  • Participate in the monthly aortic conference, including preparing minutes and following up on action items.
  • Log inpatient admissions, operations, and outcomes in the quality database platform.
  • Support organizational accreditation, compliance, and regulatory activities.
  • Participate in professional organizations and continuing education to maintain professional practice.
  • Precept advanced practice provider students and facilitate learning for new team members when needed.
  • Work with cardiac and vascular surgeons on preoperative cardiopulmonary evaluations.
  • Assist with complex care logistics and coordinate patient recovery following hospitalization.
  • Improve patient experience for new patients and patients facing an operation.
  • Participate in monthly quality meetings and quarterly reviews of center business practices.
  • Assist with developing and implementing patient care pathways.
  • Assist with developing telehealth outreach and remote patient monitoring efforts.
Desired Qualifications
  • Completion of an accredited Adult Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner or Acute Care Nurse Practitioner program for acutely ill or injured adult patients.
  • At least 3 years of experience working in cardiology, vascular medicine, or a surgical specialty as an advanced practice practitioner.
  • Experience with cross-sectional imaging and preoperative consultation.
