Requirements
  • Board certified or board eligible in Internal Medicine or Family Medicine.
  • An active, full, and unrestricted license to practice medicine in any U.S. state, territory, commonwealth, or the District of Columbia.
  • An NPI report printout.
  • An active Drug Enforcement Administration license.
  • Current Basic Life Support certification.
  • Ability to pass a federal background investigation.
  • Ability to sit, stand, walk, lift, squat, bend, twist, and reach above the shoulders during the work shift.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds from floor to waist.
  • Ability to lift up to 20 pounds.
  • Ability to carry up to 40 pounds a reasonable distance.
  • Ability to push or pull with 30 pounds of force.
Responsibilities
  • Provide primary care within the scope of practice and privileging.
  • Provide services across the continuum of care, from prevention through diagnosis, treatment, appropriate referral, and follow-up, for simple to moderately complex workloads manageable in a primary care outpatient environment.
  • Provide comprehensive primary care services, including women's health, to a defined panel of patients.
  • Work with clinic staff to schedule new and follow-up patients.
  • Take patient histories, perform physical examinations, order laboratory tests and diagnostic studies, and complete diagnoses and treatment plans for acute and chronic conditions within the scope of practice and privileging.
  • Order and monitor appropriate medications using the Veterans Affairs Formulary, query state Prescription Drug Monitoring Programs before prescribing controlled substances, and obtain required IMED consents before prescribing or dispensing medications requiring consent.
  • Maintain familiarity with the Veterans Affairs Formulary and use the computer system as needed for efficient practice.
  • Refer patients to specialty care services or hospital care when indicated, and provide patient education and counseling.
  • Complete patient documentation promptly using the Computerized Patient Record System.
  • Consult with and instruct referring physicians regarding appropriate indications for procedures so that the most expeditious and clinically relevant workup can be completed.
  • Determine the proper course of treatment and communicate in person or by phone with referring clinicians.
  • Initiate appropriate social work referrals for identified homeless persons.
  • Follow established medication policies and procedures and do not provide sample medications to patients.
