Responsibilities
  • Oversee and coordinate the execution of multiple projects across various markets, ensuring timely delivery of tasks and milestones by internal teams, suppliers, and external stakeholders to meet cost, schedule, and quality goals
  • Use established project management tools and techniques to develop, test, construct/install, and commission large-scale renewable energy storage and hybrid power systems that meet or exceed customers’ and stakeholders’ expectations
  • Manage relationships with EPC vendors, OEMs, O&M service providers, and EMS providers to coordinate, plan, and execute the installation, commissioning, and delivery of project equipment and systems
  • Contribute to creating and executing the long-term project management and execution strategy for Aypa’s energy storage and hybrid portfolio
  • Originate and report key performance indicators monthly to the broader management team, including EPC, project finance, and legal aspects
  • Collaborate with Construction Management and other stakeholders to seamlessly integrate projects from pre-construction into the project execution phase and support the transition into operations
  • Originate, administer, and track warranty claims from Notice To Proceed to Commercial Operation
  • Work with project stakeholders to determine contractual deviations and mitigate risks

Power for AI, mostly renewable, tops the shopping list for big asset managers. There's a reason they're called power players. With electricity ranking as one of the biggest constraints on AI growth, asset-management firms like Brookfield, Blackstone, KKR and Apollo are raising billions to buy, build, finance and operate the power infrastructure to provide that juice. "In the AI value chain today, energy is the largest bottleneck," Sikander Rashid, Brookfield's global AI infrastructure head, said on the firm's quarterly earnings call last week. "The US alone needs 100 gigawatts of power for AI infrastructure in the next 10 years," he added. "The grid can only make 30 gigawatts of that available." That math is driving a frenzy of dealmaking by Brookfield and other large private equity firms. Many asset managers are setting up dedicated AI infrastructure funds, buying up utilities, and building "behind the meter," on-site power plants. Energy and other data center-related infrastructure has become the hottest corner of an already survey infrastructure investment market. For many infrastructure developers, the AI boom is supercharging the already attractive economics of renewable energy and battery storage. Renewable energy is the fastest growing source of electricity for data centers globally, according to the International Energy Agency, and accounts for about half of new capacity (that's less than renewable's share of overall new energy capacity). Brookfield Asset Management, a powerhouse in sustainable infrastructure, is among the most active players in lining up power to supply data center and other commercial demand. The trillion-dollar manager, which moved its headquarters to New York from Toronto in 2024, has a mandate to invest, with partners, $100 billion over the next 10 years. Brookfield has raised $5 billion towards a new $10 billion AI infrastructure strategy that will include dedicated power investments. It estimates the AI-focused energy opportunity at more than $500 billion over the coming decade. Last month, Brookfield paid $3 billion to acquire Aypa, a Toronto and Austin-based developer, owner and operator of energy storage and hybrid renewable energy projects in North America, from Blackstone Energy Transition Partners. In March, Brookfield teamed with La Caisse, the Quebec-based pension fund manager, on a $9 billion take-private deal for Boralex, a Canadian renewable energy developer, operator and owner. The same month, it partnered with British Columbia Investment Management Corp. and Norges Bank Investment Management to launch Northview Energy, a private company that will acquire and own wind, solar and battery storage assets in the US and Canada. Brookfield also has boosted its partnership with fuel cell power company Bloom Energy, from $5 billion to $25 billion, to power data centers with rapidly deployable on-site power. And its Westinghouse unit is pursuing small, modular nuclear reactors, which promise to provide the kind of low-carbon, 24/7 baseload power that data centers demand. "AI is not only shaping our AI infrastructure strategy, it is becoming an increasingly important theme across all of Brookfield," Rashid said. "It is influencing capital deployment in our infrastructure, energy, and credit businesses." Behind the meter. The capital deployment decisions these infrastructure giants make will have enormous bearing on the shape of energy over the coming decades - and its environmental footprint. Data centers require enormous amounts of power - and water - to cool their rows of computer servers. Widespread public opposition to new data center developments is spurring developers to "bring their own power" by building on-site power generating capacity on site rather than strain consumer-facing utilities. Another advantage of "behind the meter" power: PE firms and their independent power producer partners can move much faster than regulated utilities, and skip multi-year interconnection queues for new generating capacity. Some hyperscalers such as Elon Musk's xAI are rushing in natural gas turbines, often unpermitted or without public scrutiny, to get up and running quickly. An Amazon data center being built in Pecos County, Texas that will be fueled by natural gas could release up to 33 million tons of carbon dioxide a year, making it the nation's most polluting power plant. Others are taking an "all of the above" approach. KKR this week closed a $19 billion global infrastructure fund, its largest such fund to date, to capitalize on the digitalization, electrification and industrial growth trends, the firm's Brandon Freiman said in announcing the news. KKR's mega fund clocks in just below Brookfield $23.5 billion for Global Transition Fund II clinched last fall. KKR also raised an additional $800 million in the second quarter for its global climate transition fund, which is targeting $3.5 billion and has been fundraising since 2023. Backers of the fund include the Spanish bank BBVA, the UAE's Alterra climate fund, and Temasek, Singapore's state-owned investment firm. The $758 billion asset manager firm in late June agreed to acquire the North American operations of EDF Power Solutions, a renewable energy subsidiary of the French utility EDF Group, for $4.2 billion - its largest single renewables investment to date. KKR has already invested or committed more than $75 billion across its digital infrastructure and power strategies, it says. Summit, NJ-based Energy Capital Partnerslast week raised $8.1 billion for its sixth flagship energy transition infrastructure fund. And TPG, through its Rise Climate fund, has backed industrial scale clean power producer Intersect Power since 2022. TPG participated in an $800 million round with Alphabet in late 2024 to build clean power on-site at the search company's new data centers. Alphabet outright acquired Intersect earlier this year for $4.75 billion, plus the assumption of debt. TPG and other Intersect investors, including Climate Adaptive Infrastructure, Greenbelt Capital Partners and Google, spun off Intersect's grid-connected power business to form a new independent company, IPX Power. There's room for smaller players, too. Benjamin Baker of GDEV, a distributed energy developer and operator set up by Greenbackersix years ago, remembers when "behind the meter" implied small two-megawatt solar installations. Today, he says, "you're seeing gigawatt natural gas installations drop behind the meter." "AI and data centers are the shiny object with tens or hundreds of billions of dollars in capex," or capital expenditure, he says, far more than his middle market infrastructure company can take on. But the increased electricity demand "is a tide that lifts all ships," he says, giving the firm "a pathway to scale." Bubble economics. The vast sums going towards the AI buildout, and the often circular deals funding it, have fueled concerns that data center financing may crash if AI revenues and capital spending does not live up to the hype. Hyperscalers are on track to spend some $1 trillion worldwide this year alone, according to Goldman Sachs, and dealmakers are pivoting from software to hard assets. "What happens when the other shoe drops when we see the other side of this capex cycle?" says Rob Day of Spring Lane Capital. "You're going to see these boom and bust cycles that start hitting anybody who's doing ancillary systems that are totally dependent upon data centers getting built for their revenue," he tells ImpactAlpha. If the AI bubble collapses, he fears, renewable energy providers that hitched themselves to it could suffer another black eye, following earlier pullbacks after the "Cleantech 1.0" bubble early in this century and the dashed hopes for the Biden-era Inflation Reduction Act. Clean energy could be redirected for other uses - it's harder to repurpose a giant windowless data center. A March paper from the Vanderbilt Policy Accelerator at Vanderbilt University calls for financial guardrails in advance of what the center's Asad Ramzanali argues is a coming crash, sparked by overbuilding of AI data centers. "We're mindful of the potential for excessive exuberance in this area," Blackstone's Steve Schwarzman noted on the firm's earnings call. Overinvestment, of course, is typical in the early stages of a major technology cycle. "Questions about whether too much infrastructure capacity is being built are reasonable," Brookfield's Rashid acknowledged on the firm's earnings call. "As with every major infrastructure cycle, whether it be the railroad revolution in the 1800s or the fiber build-out in early 2000s, it is inevitable for some capital to be poorly allocated." And that was just one week of infrastructure investing in July 2026. AI has rewritten the rules for infrastructure capital. Last week, mega-investors moved $297 billion across data centers, compute capacity, power infrastructure, and connectivity - with AI-driven compute dominating the allocation. This isn't a cyclical uptick. It's a structural reordering of where infrastructure capital flows. The megadeals that signal a market reset. BlackRock's Global Infrastructure Partners, Middle East's MGX, and Saudi Arabia's Anthropic Investment Program jointly acquired Aligned Data Centers for $40 billion - the largest infrastructure data center deal in history. This single transaction captured the market's conviction: compute capacity is now as critical as energy or transportation. Brookfield, long the quiet leader in infrastructure consolidation, acquired Aypa Power from Blackstone for $7 billion - a battery storage platform built for grid-scale deployment. The timing is not coincidental. Every megawatt-hour of AI compute requires proportional power infrastructure and storage to smooth demand. Anthropic and AMD announced a strategic partnership to deploy up to 2 gigawatts of GPU capacity - backed by AMD's $5 billion equity commitment. OpenAI is deploying up to 6 gigawatts via AMD's Helios rackscale system. These are infrastructure commitments, not vendor relationships. They bind compute capacity to artificial intelligence as core infrastructure. Partners Group closed its fourth direct infrastructure programme above $15 billion, dedicated to long-term infrastructure assets. This is capital-as-patient-capital - mega-funds willing to hold infrastructure for a decade or more. The persistence of mega-fund closures across consecutive quarters signals LP conviction that infrastructure is the hedge against AI disruption. Data Centers: the new grid. In the prior seven days, 26 separate data center transactions were announced. Polar DC commenced a 40MW facility in Norway. Sabey started construction on a 120MW data center campus in Oregon. Submer Technologies proposed a 2GW data center on a former steelworks in Kentucky. Hong Kong's ITC signed a memorandum for a 1GW facility near Shanghai. These are not venture-scale plays. These are industrial-grade infrastructure deployments. Hut 8 secured a $9.8 billion lease for an AI data center on its Texas campus. Pure DC secured €1.3 billion in financing for a Finnish data center campus. Verda, a Helsinki-based AI infrastructure company that raised €102.5 million just months ago, secured an additional €22 million Nordic Investment Bank loan. This is venture-scale capital chasing industrial-scale infrastructure - a sign that the deal-making architecture itself is shifting. The capital is moving from financial engineering to physical engineering. Brookfield, Partners Group, and BlackRock are not syndicating these deals on Wall Street. They are acquiring assets, building them, and holding them. This is not how infrastructure worked five years ago. Power and cooling: the second layer. Every data center needs power. Every power system needs cooling. DG Matrix and Skeleton Technologies partnered on 800V DC power systems specifically for AI data centers. Submer specializes in immersion cooling for hyperscale compute. CATL announced its first large-scale sodium-ion energy storage project in Central and Eastern Europe - a shift toward battery chemistries optimized for grid-scale storage, not vehicle propulsion. Brookfield's $7 billion Aypa Power acquisition is the clearest signal: battery storage is now a strategic infrastructure asset class, not a renewable-energy adjacency. Investors are building the full stack: compute + power + storage. This is vertical integration at the infrastructure level. Connectivity is the forgotten story. While AI infrastructure captured headlines, traditional connectivity saw consistent deployment. MTN announced a $9.1 million 5G network push in South Africa. América Móvil acquired WOW Peru to expand fiber footprint in Latin America. Telin and BW Digital landed a subsea cable in Batam, Indonesia. DP World signed a 50-year deal to develop two terminals in Fujairah. These are steady-state infrastructure deals, each $1-10 billion. They lack the drama of a $40 billion acquisition, but they are the foundation upon which cloud capacity depends. No AI infrastructure scales without last-mile connectivity. Geographic dispersion and the rush for proximity. Infrastructure investment in AI is not centralizing. The deal flow shows deployment across three zones: Western Europe (Norway, Finland, Netherlands, Germany), North America (Oregon, Texas, Kentucky), and Asia-Pacific (Shanghai, India, Indonesia, Australia, South Africa). This is deliberate geographic diversity - a hedge against regional grid constraints and latency requirements. China's Z.ai operating 1GW of data center capacity using domestically manufactured chips signals the emergence of non-Western compute infrastructure. This is new. Infrastructure investors are now hedging against geopolitical fracture, not just market cycles. The fund managers are doubling down. Partners Group, Brookfield, BlackRock's GIP, and MGX are not dabbling. They are committing multi-billion-dollar tranches to single deals and mega-funds. This is institutional capital voting with massive conviction. The traditional infrastructure playbook - toll roads, regulated utilities, brownfield assets with 20-year cash flows - is being superseded by a new category: compute infrastructure with 10-year, venture-scale returns and exponential demand curves. Mega-funds are repricing their entire infrastructure allocation around AI. Secondaries activity also accelerated. Partners Group's latest programme close shows that LPs are committing capital to infrastructure buyouts from prior vintages, freeing up cash for mega-funds to deploy into new AI-driven opportunities. This is the capital-recycling machinery of large-scale infrastructure investing moving into overdrive. What this means for Q3 and beyond. Infrastructure investing just crossed a Rubicon. Compute capacity is now core infrastructure, not a tech sector play. Mega-funds are building, acquiring, and holding these assets for the long term. Power and cooling are specializations, not afterthoughts. Connectivity remains foundational and underfunded relative to demand. The question for infrastructure managers over the next 12 months is not whether to invest in AI data centers - that horse has left the stable. It is whether the capital deployment rate can match demand. Every data center announced has a waiting list. Every power contract is oversubscribed. This is the inverse of typical infrastructure cycles: demand-constrained capital, not capital-constrained demand. For investors, the implications are stark. Infrastructure returns have historically been 7-9% annually, stable and uncorrelated. AI-driven compute infrastructure is pricing closer to 12-15%, reflecting the venture-scale demand, the scarcity of buildable assets, and the geopolitical hedging premium. This is a new asset class wearing the costume of infrastructure.

These market conditions can increase the value of storage assets that shift power across different periods of the day. Battery energy storage systems can absorb electricity when supply is abundant and release it when demand rises. They can also provide capacity, grid balancing and reliability services. Brookfield is making the investment through the second vintage of its global transition strategy. Institutional partners, including Brookfield Renewable Partners, will invest alongside the group. Jehangir Vevaina, Chief Investment Officer in Brookfield's Energy group, said: "We are excited to partner with Aypa to deliver on the company's scale growth pipeline. The companies also intend to offer integrated power solutions to utilities, corporations and other large electricity customers. Long-term contracts support cash flow. Aypa's operating and under-construction portfolio is 95% contracted through long-term agreements with investment-grade customers. Those contracts have an average remaining term of 17 years. That structure gives Brookfield greater visibility over future revenue and reduces exposure to short-term electricity price volatility. For infrastructure investors, contracted battery storage can offer characteristics similar to other long-duration energy assets. However, project economics still depend on technology costs, market design, grid connections and regulatory treatment. Aypa also brings capabilities in site selection, transmission analysis, procurement and power contracting. These skills have become increasingly important as interconnection queues lengthen across major power markets. Blackstone backed Aypa as battery storage shifted from an emerging technology into a core component of electricity infrastructure. The acquisition reflects growing investor demand for assets that can support both energy security and decarbonisation. Storage can improve the use of renewable electricity, but it also serves a wider role in managing demand growth and grid congestion. For governments and regulators, the transaction highlights the need for market rules that reward flexibility, capacity and reliability. Grid connection reform will also remain central to bringing large storage pipelines into operation. The deal remains subject to customary regulatory approvals. White & Case advised Brookfield. Once completed, the acquisition will deepen Brookfield's position in North American power infrastructure.
