Requirements
  • At least 5 years of experience in test engineering, embedded systems, or systems-level development.
  • Strong programming skills in C, C++, Python, or similar languages used for test automation and system integration.
  • Experience designing and implementing hardware-in-the-loop or system-level test environments.
  • Solid understanding of embedded systems, hardware interfaces including I2C, SPI, UART, CAN, and Ethernet, and real-time systems.
  • Experience using laboratory instrumentation such as oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and multimeters for debugging and validation.
  • Ability to read schematics and debug issues at the electrical-software boundary.
  • Ability to diagnose complex cross-disciplinary issues.
  • Experience working in fast-paced, iterative development environments.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills across engineering disciplines.
Responsibilities
  • Architect, implement, and maintain hardware-in-the-loop test systems for validating spacecraft and telescope subsystems.
  • Design test infrastructure that integrates real hardware with simulated environments, including sensors, actuators, communication links, and control systems.
  • Develop automated test frameworks and tooling to enable scalable, repeatable validation across the product lifecycle.
  • Build and maintain simulation environments for system-level testing, including fault injection and edge-case validation.
  • Collaborate with embedded, electrical, mechanical, and software teams to ensure comprehensive system verification.
  • Debug complex system-level issues across hardware and software boundaries, including real-time and edge-case failures.
  • Define and execute test plans, validation procedures, and performance benchmarks for integrated systems.
  • Support hardware bring-up, integration, and system-level validation activities.
  • Contribute to continuous integration and continuous delivery pipelines by integrating automated test suites and ensuring test coverage across releases.
  • Participate in design reviews, including preliminary design reviews and critical design reviews, to ensure testability, reliability, and system robustness.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience with spacecraft, aerospace systems, robotics, or other high-reliability environments.
  • Familiarity with embedded Linux, real-time operating systems, or firmware development workflows.
  • Experience building simulation environments or digital twins for system validation.
  • Knowledge of communication protocols and telemetry systems used in distributed or remote systems.
  • Experience with continuous integration and continuous delivery pipelines and automated test infrastructure for hardware-integrated systems.
  • Background in vision systems, sensors, or control systems.
  • Experience with environmental testing, including thermal, vibration, and vacuum testing, and validation workflows.
  • Contributions to open-source testing frameworks or embedded systems projects.
  • Passion for astronomy, physics, and scientific exploration.

Observable Space raises $90M for laser satellite communications

Observable Space has raised $90 million in its debut funding round to develop laser-based satellite communications technology. The Adrian, Michigan-based company aims to help satellites and potential orbiting data centres transmit information to and from Earth. The round was led by Lux Capital and co-led by Upfront Ventures, Detroit Venture Partners, Island Green Capital and RTX Ventures, with participation from BRV Capital and Fathom Fund. The company also announced a $94 million contract with the US Space Force to expand its fleet of ground-based optical telescopes for satellite tracking. The deal forms part of the Pentagon's broader initiative to enhance space surveillance capabilities.

Through the experiences of local, regional, national and international students, Western Illinois University has some incredible alumni who are changing the world in the workforce. This series will feature students from all over the world who are hired post-graduation. MACOMB, IL - - Meet Kenneth Van Zuiden, a graduate of Western Illinois University's Physics program, who was hired as a telescope assembly technician for Observable Space, a company that makes large production scale telescopes and related equipment. Van Zuiden found the role on Handshake when he decided to apply. He decided to reach out to their HR department to ask questions about the company to see if it was a good fit for him to go through the application process. Van Zuiden went through three interviews which included some of the founders of the company. Although he was not selected for the job he applied for (Optical Test Engineer), the hiring committee were still impressed with what he brought to the table and offered him a role as a telescope assembly technician. During Van Zuiden's time at WIU, he learned a lot of analytical skills that helped towards his physics degree. He also credited Professor Esteban Araya's, in which he learned a lot about telescopes and astronomy in his Astrophysics research class. VanZuiden plans to stay connected with WIU by keeping up with the Physics Colloquium and through the possibility of finding work within the department sometime in the future.
