Requirements
  • A Bachelor's degree and completion of an approved training program in cytotechnology are required, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • ASCP (American Society of Clinical Pathologists) certification or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required upon hire.
Responsibilities
  • Prepare cellular specimens, examine them using light microscopy, and report abnormalities.
  • Complete microscopic screening and interpretation of gynecologic specimens, retrieve significant clinical history, refer abnormal smears to a pathologist for final consultation, interpret abnormal results with the pathologist, record, code, and report diagnoses, file patient smears, and rescreen 10% of negative high-risk cases.
  • Prepare, screen, and complete microscopic interpretation of non-gynecologic specimens, including gross description, cellular preparation using approved procedures, clinical-history retrieval, review of call cases with a cytopathologist, and recording and reporting diagnoses.
  • Assist with fine needle aspiration and endoscopic brush cytology procedures by providing technical advice to clinicians, obtaining history, staining and preparing specimens, reviewing with a cytotechnologist, recording and reporting test results, and performing correlation studies.
  • Assist with accessioning and staining gynecologic specimens as needed.
  • Provide informal instruction in the fundamentals of gynecologic and non-gynecologic cytology to pathology residents.
  • Develop and update cytology workshop materials for local, national, and international instructional use.
  • Maintain awareness of new cytology techniques and methods through professional meetings and reading cytologic journals.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
