Requirements
  • A high school diploma, General Educational Development certificate, or equivalent is required.
  • Basic knowledge of all academic subjects and the ability to assist students with classwork are required.

Responsibilities
  • Shadow the assigned student throughout the school day, monitor activities, and document behavioral and academic progress.
  • Help assigned students decrease and avoid inappropriate behaviors through effective behavior management techniques.
  • Adapt behavior and intervention strategies to students’ diagnoses, disabilities, Individualized Education Programs, and Behavior Intervention Plans.
  • Assist assigned students with individual and group classroom assignments, academic accommodations, and modifications.
  • Assist teachers with implementing lesson plans and encourage assigned students’ participation and interaction.
  • Reinforce classroom learning, participation, and behavior expectations and help students remain in the classroom.
  • Provide feedback to teachers, school leaders, and team members to determine student needs and adjust interventions.
  • Prepare classroom materials, distribute books and supplies, and perform basic clerical duties.
  • Assist students during transitions between classrooms, lunch periods, arrivals, and departures.
  • Proactively identify behaviors that could lead to crises or unsafe situations and address them to limit disruptions.
  • Supervise students to ensure the safety and security of the school program.
  • Maintain student confidentiality in accordance with organizational procedures.
  • Use verbal de-escalation skills and the least restrictive behavioral interventions necessary, including approved crisis strategies, therapeutic holds, escorts, and restraints when required.
  • Work with teachers, therapists, school leaders, and team members to determine student or classroom needs and develop interventions or incentive plans when appropriate.
  • Participate in committees, meetings, supervision, and professional development activities.
  • Model and implement the organization’s core values and comply with organizational policies, rules, protocols, and procedures.
  • Complete other duties as assigned.
Desired Qualifications
  • Related coursework, an associate degree, or a bachelor’s degree is preferred.
  • Six months of formal training or experience in special education, a psychiatric setting, or a similar setting for children and adolescents is preferred.
  • Bilingual Spanish and English abilities are a plus.
