Requirements
  • A PhD in Biomedical Informatics, Ontology, Molecular Biology, Physiology, Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Biomedical Engineering, Bioinformatics, Biological or Health Sciences, or a comparable field is required, with a Master's degree plus at least three years of relevant research experience potentially accepted in lieu of a PhD.
  • Knowledge of ontology, terminology, controlled vocabularies, and data models is required.
  • Familiarity with Web Ontology Language, Protégé, GitHub, relational database management systems and SQL, public sequence databases, and model organism databases is highly desired.
  • Ability to work independently, manage time effectively, troubleshoot experiments, collaborate across disciplines, write, present, organize work, and multitask.
  • Ability to detect and translate speech or other communication is required; occasional ability to distinguish colors and perceive relative distances is required.
  • Ability to occasionally lift moderate-weight materials and stand or walk continuously is required.
Responsibilities
  • Perform data acquisition and analysis by identifying relevant information sources and extracting clinical, disease, physiological, and genetic information from published literature, clinical records, web-based sources, and other sources.
  • Develop content for web-based research resources.
  • Work with programmers and other curators to develop and update data analysis tools, database designs, and web interfaces.
  • Contribute to the development of the Ontology for Modeling and Representation of Social Entities, manage its issue tracker, create periodic releases, and lead development meetings.
  • Develop interoperability between the Ontology for Modeling and Representation of Social Entities and the Behaviour Change Intervention Ontology, and annotate Social Determinants of Health instruments and data.
  • Participate in Advancing Prevention Research in Cancer through Ontology Tools project meetings and events.
  • Contribute to the development of the Rehabilitation Ontology, manage its issue tracker, create periodic releases, and lead development meetings.
  • Contribute to ontology and vocabulary development for the Rat Genome Database, including the Rat Disease Ontology.
  • Contribute to the development of the Drug Ontology, manage its issue tracker, create periodic releases, and lead development meetings.
  • Mentor graduate students and contribute to training and scientific development within the laboratory.
  • Assist with grant proposals and collaborative research initiatives.
  • Coordinate research study activities, lead and manage projects, and present project updates at meetings.
  • Assist in creating workshops, presentations, and educational materials.
  • May oversee laboratory personnel by supporting training and development and directing, delegating, and prioritizing daily work.
Desired Qualifications
  • At least five years of research experience.
  • Experience reviewing and interpreting scientific literature and research data.
  • Experience using ontology development, annotation, term matching, referent tracking, and semantic web tools.
  • Expertise with public genomic or disease data resources and software tools, data acquisition, integration, or standardization, plus clinical, laboratory, or informatics experience.
  • Experience collaborating with domain experts to solicit ontology-development priorities and formulate term definitions and axioms.
  • A strong publication record in peer-reviewed journals.
