Requirements
- Graduate of a Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education accredited nursing program with a Master's Degree in Nursing.
- National certification by one of the recognized Advanced Practice Registered Nurse certification centers.
- Licensure or eligibility for licensure as a professional Registered Nurse and Advanced Practice Registered Nurse in West Virginia.
- Bachelor's Degree as a Medical/Surgical Physician Assistant is required.
- Graduate of an Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant approved Physician Assistant training program is required.
- Certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants is required.
- Licensure or eligibility for licensure by the West Virginia Board of Medicine is required.
- Basic Life Support certification is required, with additional Advanced Life Support training at the discretion of the department.
- Proficiency with computers.
- Strong communication skills.
- The position requires strength and/or stamina for lifting, moving, stooping, reaching, positioning patients, standing, walking, and carrying patients, materials, and equipment weighing 40 or more pounds.
- The role involves working closely with others, protracted or irregular hours, biohazards, infectious diseases, deceased persons, hands in water, and electrical hazards associated with patient-care equipment.
Responsibilities
- Manage comprehensive and individualized care for pulmonary patients and their families during inpatient hospitalization, immediately after discharge when applicable, and in the ambulatory setting.
- Complete daily rounds, consultations, and pre-procedure evaluations.
- Complete integrated assessments.
- Order additional tests or consultations in collaboration with pulmonary faculty or according to established clinical guidelines and protocols.
- Perform diagnostic tests and communicate their results according to established clinical guidelines and scope of practice.
- Consult and communicate with clinic and hospital staff regarding abnormal patient-evaluation findings.
- Perform comprehensive clinical evaluations and document findings in the medical record.
- Facilitate patient discharge by coordinating appropriate services and tests required for outpatient follow-up appointments when applicable.
- Develop comprehensive individualized plans of care for pulmonary patients, including teaching, discharge planning, ambulatory follow-up, and referrals to other healthcare-team members.
- Care for patients across the age continuum covered by the individual's education and certification.
- Identify unstable or complex pulmonary-care situations and facilitate appropriate intervention in clinic or hospital settings.
- Recognize emergency situations and initiate effective emergency care.
- Evaluate pulmonary patients and coordinate follow-up procedures and tests in the ambulatory setting when applicable.
- Assist with collecting outcome measures when applicable.
- Use critical thinking and diagnostic reasoning in clinical decision-making to identify, evaluate, and manage individual patient and family needs.
- Use equipment safely.
- Base decisions and actions on scientific principles, established standards of care, and research findings.
- Provide education to nursing staff, hospital staff, students, patients, families, and the community using teaching and learning theory and appropriate teaching strategies.
- Promote an environment that facilitates learning by responding to patient and family preferences, priorities, and readiness to learn.
- Update professional knowledge throughout the year.
- Complete all identified clinical competencies.
- Serve as a resource for staff caring for pulmonary patients.
- Provide educational programs to professional and paraprofessional personnel in the area of expertise.
- Participate in community programs and distribute literature as appropriate in the area of expertise.
- Document the plan of care, interventions, and evaluations clearly and concisely in the patient's medical record according to approved hospital policies and documentation compliance standards.
- Collaborate with leaders and staff to achieve patient-outcome-based improvements in care.
- Provide leadership in developing and implementing changes in pulmonary practice that positively affect patient outcomes.
- Work collaboratively with medical and nursing staff to facilitate creative problem-solving and provide professional support.
- Participate in and initiate interdisciplinary approaches to patient care, program development, and education, and serve as a professional role model.
- Promote and practice innovation in the expanded role of delivering care to pulmonary patients and families throughout inpatient hospitalization and in ambulatory settings.
- Participate in and provide leadership for committees and task forces.
- Document hours and submit billing reports as appropriate.
- Review and interpret pulmonary data from patient registries, clinical and financial reports, length of stay, access to care, and cost-per-case reports, and recommend or implement changes as necessary.
- Participate in clinical trials and research studies with the Principal Investigator.
- Assist pulmonary faculty, administrators, and directors with collecting outcome measures.
- Perform other assigned duties and projects.

- Pulmonary or acute care experience.
- Eligible new graduates will be considered.
- Acute Care Nurse Practitioners or Family Nurse Practitioners will be considered.
