Requirements
  • Graduate of a Physician Assistant program accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant.
  • New York State Physician Assistant license required.
  • Current National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants certification required.
  • Basic Life Support, Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support, and Automated External Defibrillator certifications from the American Heart Association required; certifications from other organizations are not accepted.
  • Drug Enforcement Administration license required.
Responsibilities
  • Provide comprehensive cardiothoracic surgery patient management and direct patient care, including physical examinations, data collection and documentation, approved diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, laboratory studies and professional evaluations, and appropriate interventions and medications.
  • Provide clinical support for Cardiothoracic Surgery Service Line initiatives in collaboration with affiliated provider groups.
  • Function as a first or second assistant under the surgeon during major and minor cardiothoracic surgical procedures when competencies are met.
  • Harvest and prepare saphenous veins suitable for coronary artery bypass grafting when competencies are met.
  • Be on call at assigned times to assist attending surgeons in urgent or emergency surgical procedures outside usual working hours.
  • Assist with preparation prior to surgery.
  • Participate in the care of Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery patients, including performing histories and physicals, ordering additional tests when indicated, reviewing all pre-admission testing results, and notifying the attending surgeon of abnormal results.
  • Write admission orders for patients admitted to the Cardiothoracic Surgery service.
  • Assist with pre- and post-operative care under the surgeon's supervision for assigned patients.
  • Write orders for laboratory tests, medications, narcotics, stimulants, and depressant drugs for patients under the supervising surgeon's care.
  • Write routine pre- and post-operative orders as necessary for patient care.
  • Perform routine procedures in pre- and post-operative patient care as assigned by the attending surgeon.
  • Insert catheters, nasogastric tubes, intravenous infusions, intra-arterial catheters, and urethral catheters.
  • Remove jugular, subclavian, and arterial lines; Swan-Ganz lines; epicardial pacing wires; and mediastinal and pleural chest tubes.
  • Perform emergency life-saving procedures in cases such as cardiac arrest, respiratory arrest, or massive hemorrhage in the absence of a physician.
  • Provide training and instructions for students, paramedicals, and other non-physician professionals associated with the Cardiothoracic Surgery Departments.
  • Discuss appropriate conduit with the attending surgeon before each case.
  • Write progress notes documenting patient status, treatments, and procedures performed.
  • Notify the supervising surgeon of unusual or unexpected events or problems requiring direct physician consultation.
  • Write orders and document the institution and maintenance of physical restraints in accordance with current hospital policy and applicable state law.
  • Remain in the hospital during regularly scheduled working hours unless excused by the Director of Cardiothoracic Surgery or designee.
  • Perform additional duties and procedures assigned by the Director of Cardiothoracic Surgery or designee to support patient care and department operations.
  • Perform procedures under the direction of the surgeon in charge, including urinary bladder catheterization; intestinal intubation; injections and immunizations; phlebotomy; surgical wound care, including redressing and removal of sutures; shortening or removing wound drains; starting intravenous infusions and blood transfusions using customary check and re-check procedures; and removing intrathoracic catheters.
Desired Qualifications
  • A master's degree is preferred.
  • Previous cardiothoracic surgery experience is preferred.
  • New graduates may be considered if they have relevant Physician Assistant electives or clinical background.
