Requirements
  • The candidate must be educated as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) or Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) through an approved program.
  • The candidate must hold current licensure as a Licensed Practical Nurse in Illinois.
  • The candidate must obtain American Heart Association CPR certification within 30 days of hire.
  • The candidate must assume accountability and responsibility for their own practice and delegated responsibilities.
  • The candidate must comply with applicable nursing regulations, infection-control policies, OSHA requirements, incident-reporting procedures, confidentiality requirements, and organizational conduct standards.
Responsibilities
  • Provide nursing care according to individual patient needs and the Illinois Nurse Practice Act.
  • Manage the daily operations of the office.
  • Interview patients regarding nursing history, assess health knowledge and maintenance, and document findings in the medical record.
  • Obtain medical information, chief complaints, vital signs, and diagnostic test results in preparation for physician examinations and document them in the medical record.
  • Advocate for patients by protecting patient rights and addressing complaints about service.
  • Make referrals to other agencies or providers to support continuity of care.
  • Screen patient problems in person or by telephone and resolve them through advice or referral to a physician.
  • Provide home-care instructions for procedures and medications.
  • Provide preoperative and postoperative instructions for specific surgical and medical procedures and document patient education in the medical record.
  • Administer respiratory therapeutic treatments and document them according to policy.
  • Administer irrigations, including Foley catheter irrigations, enemas, and ear washes, and document the results in the medical record.
  • Collect specimens, including cultures, and provide coding.
  • Assist with applying and removing casts, provide patient instruction, and document the care in the medical record.
  • Perform catheterization, suture removal, and dressing changes according to infection-control policy and document the results in the medical record.
  • Administer medications by permitted routes, excluding intravenous blood and blood products, intravenous push medications, chemotherapy, and adding medication to existing intravenous infusions; this includes heparin.
  • Assist physicians during examinations and treatment by handing instruments, providing dressings, and preparing equipment according to infection-control policy.
  • Orient new personnel to the specialty.
  • Provide emotional support and guidance to patients and families.
  • Serve on the STAT Code Team when assigned.
  • Serve as a Health Care Assistant according to hospital policy when assigned.
  • Maintain patient and staff confidentiality.
  • Maintain professional knowledge through education programs and current journals and literature, and document requirements for annual evaluation.
  • Perform insurance pre-certifications and referrals as needed.
  • Schedule procedures and surgeries as needed.
  • Perform IV therapy after successfully completing an approved course.
  • Perform other assigned job duties.
