Newly established cancer leadership roles bring promise to the future of research and care.

Newly established cancer leadership roles bring promise to the future of research and care. Oct 15, 2026, 11:20 ET Montefiore Einstein Comprehensive Cancer Center Appoints Senior Leaders to Advance Research and Programs Spanning Basic, Translational, Clinical, and Population Science BRONX, N.Y., Oct. 15, 2026 /PRNewswire/ - Ulrich Steidl, M.D., Ph.D., has finalized his Montefiore Einstein Comprehensive Cancer Center (MECCC) senior leadership team, just six months after stepping into the role of MECCC Director and Vice President of Cancer Medicine at Montefiore Einstein. "Today marks a new chapter as we elevate elite colleagues who have significant research accomplishments and leadership experience to principal posts at MECCC," said Dr. Steidl. "They are recognized "all-stars" in their fields, and together, working at one of the nation's top cancer centers, we will move the needle in not just helping people survive advanced cancers but identifying the factors that drive certain cancers from occurring in the first place." "All-Stars" in Cancer Research & Familiar Faces to the Bronx Community * Amit K. Verma, M.D., M.B.B.S., who was named Chair, Medical Oncology at Montefiore Einstein earlier this year, moved from Associate Director to Deputy Director of MECCC. Dr. Verma is a leader in the study and treatment of myeloid malignancies, such as myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) and acute myeloid leukemia (AML), and Dr. Verma was part of the team that first defined stem cell alterations in MDS and AML. He also led research that discovered the key role of several signaling pathways that are critical to the development of MDS. These findings directly resulted in an FDA-approved novel therapy for MDS. Most recently, Dr. Verma earned an "All-Star" Grant from the V Foundation for his ability to drive transformative projects that can significantly advance cancer research and treatment. He was also elected to the Association of American Physicians (AAP), an honor extended to physicians with outstanding credentials in basic or translational biomedical research. * Julio A. Aguirre-Ghiso, Ph.D., is now Associate Director, Basic Science. Dr. Aguirre-Ghiso, who also serves as Director of MECCC's Cancer Dormancy Institute, is an internationally recognized cancer biologist who recently earned the Metastasis Research Society's highest honor for his substantial advancements in understanding cancer metastasis. He has helped lead a major shift in the cancer biology field by investigating how cancer cells hibernate undetected for long periods of time and what causes them to suddenly awaken to seed deadly, treatment-resistant metastases. He brings his deep scientific expertise in cancer biology and natural curiosity to help stimulate tomorrow's medical breakthroughs. * Marina Konopleva M.D., Ph.D., now Associate Director, Translational Science, is also Co-Director of the Blood Cancer Institute and Director of the Leukemia Program at Montefiore Einstein. She is internationally recognized for her transformational research on proteins that can help leukemia cells evade their natural death signals and how to target these same proteins to make cancer cells more vulnerable to treatment. Her discoveries and translational research have had clinical practice-changing impact in the treatment of myeloid leukemias and other cancers, and led to FDA approval of novel cell death-stimulating drugs. Dr. Konopleva is an elected member of the AAP and has been selected as the recipient of the highly prestigious 2026 Ernest Beutler Prize in Clinical Science by the American Society of Hematology. She will continue spearheading efforts to turn basic laboratory discoveries into clinical treatments that can advance the health of MECCC's patients. Community Engagement at the Forefront Dr. Steidl and his team have also developed a senior leadership position to strengthen research on associations between environmental exposures, health related social needs, and cancer health outcomes. H. Dean Hosgood, Ph.D., Co-Leader of MECCC's Cancer Epidemiology Prevention & Control Program and now Associate Director for Population and Community Sciences has been appointed to lead this effort. Dr. Hosgood is formally trained in environmental epidemiology, cancer epidemiology, and molecular epidemiology. He currently leads a global consortium to investigate how indoor air pollutants - caused from the burning of coal or wood for heating and cooking - are associated with lung cancer mortality and result in an increased risk for other cancers. His research on the interactions between genetics and environmental exposures have appeared in more than 250 peer-reviewed publications. Rounding out the impressive list, Wenjun Guo, Ph.D., will now serve as Co-Leader of the Tumor Microenvironment & Metastasis program, alongside Maja H. Oktay, M.D., Ph.D., and Dr. Aguirre-Ghiso, Ph.D. Aditi Shastri, M.D., has joined Steven Almo, Ph.D., and Evripidis Gavathiotis, Ph.D., as co-leader of MECCC's Cancer Therapeutics Program, developing precision drugs and cellular therapies. For more than 50 years, MECCC has been at the forefront of care and community engagement with novel research and transdisciplinary initiatives, including its Tumor Microenvironment and Metastasis, Stem Cell and Cancer Biology, Cancer Therapeutics, and Cancer Epidemiology, Prevention and Control programs. MECCC patients also benefit from services like its nationally lauded Bronx Oncology Living Daily program which supports patients and families impacted by cancer through peer navigators as well as wellness workshops like yoga, reiki, and creative arts. Montefiore Einstein presents the newly renovated labor and delivery unit at Jack D. Weiler Hospital. Oct 15, 2026, 07:02 ET The project was funded with $9.68 million from the New York State Health Care Facility Transformation Program BRONX, N.Y., October 15, 2026 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ - Various elected officials and members of Montefiore Einstein staff had the honor of presenting the newly renovated labor and delivery unit at Jack D. Weiler Hospital. The Weiler Maternal-Infant Unit - located on the sixth floor of 1825 Eastchester Road and funded through a $9.68 million grant from the New York State Health Care Facility Transformation Program - features a reorganization of workflows and infrastructure improvements in the labor and delivery rooms, the obstetric surgical area, and the triage and waiting areas. "Our hospital is the only regional perinatal center in the Bronx and cares for the highest-risk pregnancies throughout the Bronx and parts of Queens," explains Angela Gonzalez-Perez, MPA, FACHE, Vice President of Operations and Executive Director of Jack D. Weiler Hospital. "For us, it was a priority to ensure that our patients enjoyed a warm and welcoming environment where they could receive the best possible care. Thanks to the enormous support of New York State, this newly renovated space is the physical expression of our vision: to be a top-tier academic medical center that transforms health and improves people's lives." Better experiences for Bronx patients This modern unit incorporates state-of-the-art improvements in the labor and delivery rooms, which now have private bathrooms; a reorganized clinical team station and workflow; a modernized triage area with six triage stations and one assessment station, and a modernized obstetric surgical area with a post-anesthesia care unit (PACU) exclusively for cesarean sections equipped with four bays, as well as improvements in the three operating rooms of the labor and delivery unit. In addition, lighting throughout the unit has been improved to provide a warmer and more relaxing environment. Montefiore Einstein has also invested in remote monitoring instruments to support both patients and clinical teams, and offers new food options to improve the patient experience. Under the leadership of Mark H. Einstein, M.D., M.S. - who in 2024 held the Chella and Moise Safra Chair, as well as the chairmanship of the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Women's Health - 26 new physicians specializing in areas such as critical care obstetrics, adolescent medicine, and oncofertility have been brought on board, along with advanced practice nurses (NPs) and physician assistants, to strengthen care. In addition, services such as universal hospital depression screening; collaborative reproductive psychiatry care; a postpartum outpatient clinic specializing in people with medically complex or high-risk pregnancies, and a maternal cardiology program continue to be strengthened. Dr. Einstein's leadership team has played a fundamental role in the design of this new unit. "Thanks to the new technological improvements and the reorganization of workflows, we are better prepared to handle the most complex cases, and to do so in a renovated, attractive, and welcoming environment for families," says Rodney Wright, M.D., Vice President of Obstetrics. "I am enormously proud to present this unit and to continue expanding our department and support services for our patients and their loved ones," says Mark H. Einstein, M.D., M.S., who is also a professor of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Women's Health (Gynecologic Oncology) at Albert Einstein College of Medicine. The renovation of the Labor and Delivery Unit was carried out in phases, which avoided having to interrupt patient care. Five of the six planned phases have already been completed. The last phase, expected to be completed in early 2027, will include the renovation of the last two labor and delivery rooms and the modernization of a service elevator located at the rear. 12 nurses say they are being replaced by AI.

12 nurses say they are being replaced by AI. - New York hospital nurses say this move is just the "tip of the iceberg" by Shannon Firth, Enterprise & Investigative Writer, MedPage Today Montefiore Medical Center in the Bronx, New York, fired 12 nurses and plans to replace them with artificial intelligence (AI) software, said nurses and city and state officials during a call with reporters on Wednesday. The change comes on the heels of a February agreementopens in a new tab or window between the nurses' union and the Montefiore hospital system that ended a nearly month-long strikeopens in a new tab or window. Nurses say the terminations directly violate that agreement, and the New York State Nurses Association (NYSNA) has filed a class action grievance. A spokesperson for Montefiore Health System says the claims are "inaccurate and misleading." In late May, Ajita Mathew, RN, who has been a nurse for 36 years and is a member of Montefiore's utilization review team, received a letter from the manager of Labor and Employee Relationsopens in a new tab or window stating that her position would be eliminated in 45 days. "During this time, the Medical Center will work closely with you to determine whether there are suitable positions that [are] in accordance with the collective bargaining agreement," the letter stated. "Montefiore recognizes the commitment you have made to its patients and will work hard to make this transition easier for you." All 12 nurses on the utilization review team received a similar letter, NYSNA said. Marilyn Shuler, RN, who has worked at Montefiore for 39 years, said nurses had been told that "someone" would be sending necessary clinical information from patients' charts to payers, but no one made clear whether that task would fall to a nurse or a machine. Utilization review nurses have a "vast knowledge" based on years of experience, Shuler said during the Wednesday call. "So much of what we do cannot be reduced... to a click." New York City Council member Shirley Aldebol, who advocated for Montefiore to stop its "45-day displacement clock," said she's worried replacing "complicated clinical judgment by real nurses" with AI will lead to dropped cases, missed diagnoses, unapproved surgeries, and other patient services being denied. Judy Sheridan-Gonzalez, RN, an emergency department nurse at Montefiore and former NYSNA president, said utilization review teams exist because insurers want to save money and not pay for prolonged visits if they can avoid it. "The patients require a human being to advocate for [them] to see if the visit is necessary," she noted. If a patient's situation improves but they're not well enough to go home, an algorithm can't make those calls, she pointed out. "These algorithms just take very raw data and make a conclusion... without taking into account the patient's gender, race, ethnicity, cultural needs, physical needs, and clinical needs, because they can't do that analysis," Sheridan-Gonzalez said. Unlike an algorithm, nurses reviewing charts have access to people and can say, "There's something missing here. Let me go find out what that is." "This is all about human beings, about their outcomes," she added. "It's about... what's going to happen while they're in the hospital, what kind of teaching needs do they have, what learning needs do they have, what kind of support do they have at home? How will they survive when they go home?" It's about "other complex conditions that come into play here, which require a different type of assessment. Only a human being can do that," she argued. Sheridan-Gonzalez also pointed out that the changes violate the most recent union agreement, which states "that any use of AI really has to be discussed with the union to ensure that our patients are protected." "Montefiore is denying that AI has anything to do with this, which we know is not true," she noted. In a statement to Gothamist, opens in a new tab or window Joe Solomonese, a spokesperson for Montefiore Health System, blasted the nurses' claims. "As is often the case, the claims by NYSNA are inaccurate and misleading," Solomonese said. "What is true is that we are always investing in new technology to ensure the best care and outcomes for our patients and will continue to do so for the betterment of the people we serve." The nurses said Montefiore changed its utilization review process earlier this year, using AI-powered software from Datavant, a private equity-backed health IT company. In May, Datavant settled a class action lawsuitopens in a new tab or window following a data breach that impacted 320,702 individuals. Sheridan-Gonzalez said that this move is the "tip of the iceberg." They started with nurses doing documentation, "but who's to say that in the future they won't replace... other nurses who actually touch patients, work with patients in the hospital, have that intimate relationship... with something else, whether it's a machine or a robot or some kind of algorithm," she pointed out. "Nurses are not against technology," said Shaiju Kalathil, RN, an NYSNA executive committee member at Montefiore. "The problem is when hospitals roll out new technologies without evidence that these technologies will improve the lives of patients and working people, and worse, with evidence that patient care may suffer, and jobs will be long lost." Shuler stressed that "what we want is simple: to stop layoffs, the hospital to keep a licensed nurse to complete the utilization review and sit down with the nurses who do this work, [and] discuss how AI can support us instead of replacing us."
