Debt-laden Arqiva, worth just $79M, fronts campaign to delay Freeview switch-off

Arqiva, the debt-laden operator of Britain's TV masts, is behind a campaign to delay the switch-off of terrestrial TV signals, according to broadcasters and industry sources. The Broadcast 2040+ campaign, launched in 2022, argues an early move to streaming would hurt elderly and vulnerable viewers. Arqiva says it stands alongside more than 35 organisations and denies the campaign is driven by self-interest. The company posted an £839m pre-tax loss in the year to June 2025, with total debt near £9bn. Its biggest shareholder, Digital 9, wrote its 52% stake down from £213m to zero. Arqiva is now valued at £62m, against the £6bn it sought in an aborted 2017 float. Prime Minister Andy Burnham has said he is "concerned" about plans to end Freeview, which the previous government had suggested for 2034.

Arqiva migrates event scheduling and resource management.

Arqiva migrates event scheduling and resource management. Arqiva has migrated its occasional-use event scheduling and resource-management workflow to the DataMiner xOps platform, integrating the functions with its wider broadcast operations. The move forms part of Arqiva's ongoing strategy to bring its broadcast operations together on a shared operational platform, reducing reliance on separate tools and enabling scheduling and resource management to operate alongside other applications, services and capabilities within DataMiner. The migration was completed in less than three months, moving Arqiva from a standalone scheduling and resource-management tool to a fully integrated solution. Thomas Gunkel, Marketing Manager Broadcast at Skyline Communications, the company behind DataMiner xOps, attributed the speed of the project to three factors: the availability of existing scheduling and resource-management solutions through the company's digital marketplace, the cloud-based delivery model and Arqiva's established in-house expertise. "Three things made that possible. First, Arqiva wasn't starting from scratch: the core scheduling and resource management capabilities were already available as standard solutions on our digital marketplace. Second, the cloud-based delivery model meant there was no new infrastructure stack to build and operate. And finally, Arqiva already had more than a decade of DataMiner expertise in-house, allowing its own teams to take a leading role in the migration." Arqiva has been expanding its use of DataMiner over the past decade, adopting the platform to support additional operational requirements rather than introducing separate standalone systems for each new function. This approach allows new operational domains to build on shared infrastructure, data, integrations, workflows and in-house expertise. DataMiner already orchestrates connectivity between Arqiva's sites and manages the company's national and local digital audio broadcasting (DAB) platform. The platform is also set to support Arqiva's latest playout media services. The latest migration represents a further step towards consolidating Arqiva's broadcast operations within a common environment, with scheduling and resource management now integrated into the same platform as its wider operational capabilities. Arqiva to handle Gulfsat satellite uplinks from UK.

Arqiva to handle Gulfsat satellite uplinks from UK. Reporter October 15, 2026 - 4:18 pm 2 minutes Arqiva will uplink four Ku band transponders for Kuwaiti operator Gulfsat from two UK teleports under a three year agreement. The arrangement will see Arqiva provide managed fibre connectivity and satellite uplink services from its Chalfont and Crawley facilities onto Eutelsat 8WB, supporting broadcasters and operators across the Middle East and North Africa. The service includes global fibre connectivity, integrated infrastructure and 24/7 technical operations, with the UK locations providing geographically separate transmission facilities outside the Middle East. This arrangement is designed to improve business continuity and operational resilience for Gulfsat, which selected Arqiva partly because of its European infrastructure and ability to serve satellite beams covering the region. Both UK teleports have received Tier 4 accreditation from the World Teleport Association, recognising their operational resilience, security and service assurance capabilities. Gaurav Jandwani, Executive Director, Media and Broadcast at Arqiva, said: "It's a model we're ready to extend to operators and broadcasters across the Middle East and Africa." Mustafa Murad, CEO of Gulfsat, said: "We were particularly impressed by the speed of execution, with the entire service stood up in just a few months." The initial agreement also provides opportunities for the two companies to explore further cooperation involving cloud playout, headend services, streaming, content delivery networks and monetisation. The contract represents a further expansion of Arqiva's international media services operations, with its UK infrastructure now supporting additional satellite distribution requirements for the Middle East.
