About the Job

Requirements

  • A satisfactory background and motor vehicle record check are required.
  • Must pass a pre-employment, post-accident, reasonable-suspicion, and/or random drug test.
  • Must have at least 1 year of experience in high-voltage Protection and Control testing and commissioning.
  • Must be familiar with SEL, GE, ABB, Siemens, Westinghouse, or equivalent relay platforms.
  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel sufficiently to produce test records, redlines, daily field reports, and task-level test and isolation plans for Senior or Lead review.
  • Must be able to follow technical direction from the Senior or Lead and apply it accurately in the field while beginning to exercise independent judgment on familiar, standard configurations.
  • Must be able to work safely around energized electrical equipment and mechanical hazards, and in operational substations and construction environments.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds, travel as required, and work overtime and outage schedules as necessary.
  • Must be able to work in environments with outdoor weather conditions, noise, vibration, heat, dust, oil, grease, and energized equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Execute assigned relay protection testing tasks using Doble, Omicron, RTS, SEL AcSELerator, GE Enervista, and equivalent testing platforms under Senior or Lead oversight.
  • Perform relay input/output testing, analog-to-digital metering checks, and individual element pickup and timing tests, and accurately document the results.
  • Perform current transformer and voltage transformer testing, including ratio, polarity, phasing, and single-point grounding verification on familiar configurations, with oversight available for complex arrangements.
  • Execute breaker control circuit testing, including trip path verification, auxiliary contact checks, and breaker functional tests, as directed.
  • Read and navigate one-line and three-line diagrams, schematics, wiring diagrams, cable schedules, and panel layouts on standard configurations.
  • Identify station phasing and equipment orientation, seeking guidance on novel or complex configurations.
  • Apply developing knowledge of alternating-current and direct-current power system fundamentals and basic power calculations; protection zones and equipment relationships; overcurrent, differential, and basic impedance protection concepts; instrument transformer behavior and accuracy class; and breaker control circuits, including trip coils, auxiliary contacts, and direct-current battery systems.
  • Navigate relay manufacturer instruction manuals and settings files to support assigned testing tasks.
  • Begin connecting individual test results to the broader protection scheme with Senior or Lead coaching.
  • Engage with POWERX Academy training material, study protection theory, relay platforms, and commissioning standards, and apply learning directly to field assignments.
  • Develop test plans and task-level isolation plans for routine scopes for Senior or Lead review.
  • Review assigned drawing packages before testing, identifying questions and potential inconsistencies for discussion with the Senior or Lead before work begins.
  • Ensure testing aligns with utility standards, North American Electrical Testing Association practices, and client-specific commissioning requirements as communicated by the Senior or Lead.
  • Maintain complete, accurate, and well-organized test records, redlines, and daily reports.
  • Study protection theory, relay platforms, and POWERX commissioning standards to progress toward Senior level.
  • Support and assist Test Engineers on assigned tasks, sharing developing knowledge and reinforcing safe work practices.
  • Communicate task status, observations, and concerns clearly and proactively to the Senior or Lead.
  • Participate constructively in pre-job briefs, tailboards, and post-job reviews.
  • Maintain and promote a safety-first culture in all substation environments.
  • Adhere to Lock Out/Tag Out procedures and switching boundaries, with Senior or Lead verification on complex isolation configurations.
  • Apply Human Performance Improvement tools correctly on all tasks, selecting appropriate tools with Senior or Lead guidance as needed.
  • Perform live-dead-live checks independently on every task involving energized equipment.
  • Participate actively in daily safety discussions, job hazard analysis reviews, and pre-job briefs.
  • Maintain compliance with Occupational Safety and Health Administration requirements, North American Electric Reliability Corporation Critical Infrastructure Protection requirements, utility requirements, and internal POWERX standards.
  • Escalate any safety concern or unexpected field condition to the Senior or Lead immediately.
  • Maintain professional conduct in all client and operations interactions.
  • Maintain accurate and detailed records of commissioning activities, test results, and field observations.
  • Support the Senior or Lead in preparing turnover documentation and commissioning packages.
  • Perform additional responsibilities and tasks as required to support organizational goals and adapt to evolving business needs.

Desired Qualifications

  • A Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or Electrical Technology, or an Associate degree in Electrical Technology or related field experience is preferred.
  • Experience commissioning substations from 12.5 kV through 245 kV is preferred.
  • OSHA 30 certification is preferred.
  • Knowledge of the National Electrical Code and OSHA Electrical Safe Work Practices is preferred.
  • First Aid and CPR certification are preferred.
  • Familiarity with NERC CIP requirements is preferred.

About the Company

POWERX

Non-invasive sensors monitor and reduce energy

PowerX develops a home energy management system called the PowerX Energy Suite that uses non-invasive sensors to monitor water, electricity, and gas in real time. PowerX Water attaches to water heaters and main lines to measure flow and detect leaks, while PowerX Electricity clamps onto the circuit box to identify each appliance's energy signature; data go to a central hub and the PowerX Terra AI platform. The AI learns household patterns, provides personalized savings tips, can automate actions like adjusting a water heater, and alerts users to leaks or inefficiencies. The system installs without plumbing or wiring changes and is sold directly to homeowners with a claim of about six months ROI, aiming to lower utility bills and carbon footprint.
