Requirements
  • Related secretarial and computer experience is required.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology is required or recommended in the minimum qualifications.
  • Knowledge of cultural awareness and the ability to convey respect and connect effectively with people from diverse backgrounds are required.
  • Understanding of effective communication concepts, tools, and techniques, including accurately transmitting, receiving, and interpreting ideas, information, and needs, is required.
  • Ability to use patient- and family-centered practices and collaborate respectfully with patients, families, and designated care partners is required.
  • Ability to lift and carry 40–50 pounds, including pushing or pulling patients and performing lateral transfers, is required.
  • Frequent to continuous standing and walking is required; patient transporters may walk 8–10 miles per shift.
  • Ability to perform role-specific physical activities, including kneeling, bending, squatting, and cardiopulmonary resuscitation, may be required.
  • Ability to work the stated day shift is required.
Responsibilities
  • Perform clerical duties, including data entry into the Hospital Information System, to support unit operations.
  • Support overall unit flow by answering incoming calls, organizing information, and completing duties related to patient admission, transfer, and discharge.
  • Collaborate with unit-based clinical staff and other departments to coordinate off-unit testing and appointments.
  • Work with unit leadership and supply chain to support the unit’s inventory needs.
  • Interact with co-workers, visitors, patients, families, and other staff in accordance with organizational values and inclusion practices.
  • Follow established protocols and individual performance requirements to minimize risk of harm to patients and others.
  • Communicate with and support the interprofessional team, patients, families, and designated care partners.
  • Maintain regular communication with the charge nurse to meet unit needs.
  • Monitor the electronic patient bed system for admission and discharge bed flow, assign admissions, complete staffing assignments when needed, and request patient transport.
  • Coordinate patient appointments and testing in the acute care setting, including transportation, and may coordinate patient discharge appointments.
  • Perform clerical functions to support the department and maintain complete and organized medical records.
  • Organize the work environment for effective and efficient department operations.
  • Process medical orders to facilitate implementation of the patient care regimen.
  • Use information technology to communicate, manage knowledge, mitigate errors, and support ethical decision-making.
  • Respond actively during unit emergency codes by calling the emergency response dispatcher and helping the team gather equipment such as electrocardiogram equipment, glucometers, crash carts, suction equipment, and flushes.
  • Troubleshoot equipment failures, attempt resets, and refer unresolved issues to the appropriate on-call repair team.
  • Participate in unit committee meetings in addition to staff meetings.
  • Monitor the tube station for incoming and outgoing items, including medications and cardiac-monitor strips, and dispense items accordingly.
  • Comply with hospital policies and procedures and perform other related duties as assigned.
Desired Qualifications
  • A high school diploma or equivalent is preferred.
  • Data entry experience is preferred.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology is highly recommended.
