Requirements
  • A Bachelor's degree in Athletic Training or a related field is required, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Certification as an Athletic Trainer by the National Athletic Trainers' Association Board of Certification is required.
  • New York State licensure as an athletic trainer is required.
  • Current cardiopulmonary resuscitation certification is required, with the ability to call for or render care during a patient emergency.
  • The employee must maintain all requirements mandated by Strong Memorial Hospital or Strong Health as a condition of employment.
  • Internship route certification in Athletic Training is required.
  • Band Two status requires at least 18 months of progressively responsible professional experience in outpatient orthopedic clinical care and athletic training outreach.
  • Band Three status requires at least 4 years of progressively responsible professional experience as an athletic trainer in outpatient orthopedic clinical care and athletic training outreach.
  • Senior status requires at least 6 years of progressively responsible professional experience as an athletic trainer in outpatient orthopedic clinical care and athletic training outreach.
Responsibilities
  • Provide athletic training services to local high schools and collegiate institutions through prevention, conditioning, re-conditioning, and rehabilitation for athletic injuries in a clinic setting under physician direction and in collaboration with medical and allied health professionals.
  • Evaluate injuries, apply first aid, coordinate referrals to medical care, communicate with parents or guardians and physicians, develop conditioning programs during recovery, instruct athletes in prescribed home rehabilitation programs, and teach functional progression for return to participation.
  • Instruct athletes, parents or guardians, and coaches regarding conditioning, weight control, diet, injury prevention and care; educate coaches on performance-enhancement procedures and techniques; teach student athletic trainers first aid protocols; provide guidance on prophylactic skills and record keeping; and conduct in-service programs for coaching staff.
  • Evaluate prior injuries and develop and teach injury-prevention programs; evaluate injury rates and causes; recommend changes in sports techniques or practice procedures; and educate, coach, and train student athletic trainers in approved procedures.
  • Maintain inventory and assist with ordering supplies as needed.
  • Document patients' progress and responses to treatment in the medical record.
  • Evaluate patients' functional status, abilities, and disabilities for participation in sports activities; apply or direct application of measures and tests; and plan treatment programs based on physician diagnosis, prognosis, and orders.
  • Determine the types and frequencies of rehabilitation and communicate care-plan options to patients.
  • Obtain supporting information from family members, physicians, nursing staff, and other sources.
  • Communicate with physicians and others involved in care and recommend program modifications as needed.
  • Assist patients via the hospital call-bell system under the direction of a registered nurse.
  • Provide range of motion in accordance with the plan of care.
  • Initiate and assist with transfers in and out of beds, chairs, wheelchairs, and lifts; instruct patients and families in safe transfer techniques.
  • Select and safely use transfer equipment.
  • Collaborate with team members to meet patient mobilization needs.
  • Promote functional gains through patient instruction and supervision.
  • Participate in creating mobility plans.
  • Ensure side rails and safety equipment are fully positioned and operational.
  • Follow hospital safety policies and procedures and notify appropriate persons of hazards.
  • Remain in constant observation of assigned patients.
  • Provide care for patients across different age groups.
  • Participate in departmental meetings and administrative and clinical continuing-education programs.
  • Maintain current knowledge by reading professional articles and journals and attending continuing-education courses in the athletic-training field.
  • Attend selected professional meetings and seminars.
  • Support orthopedic sports physicians in clinic by documenting, taking histories, performing examinations, and discussing exercise progression with patients.
  • Assist in the ambulatory surgery center with patient-care education and postoperative exercise guidelines.
  • Perform evaluations and physical testing with workplace-health clients to develop exercise programs for injury prevention and health maintenance.
  • Assist with sports-performance programs, including performance training, active release techniques, and group exercise classes.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Desired Qualifications
  • A Master's degree in Athletic Training or a related field is preferred.
  • One year dedicated to the University of Rochester Medical Center Sports Medicine Department is preferred for Band Three status.
  • Two years dedicated to the University of Rochester Medical Center Sports Medicine Department are preferred for Senior status.
