Requirements
  • A Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) degree from an accredited medical school is required.
  • Completion of an Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME)-accredited residency in General or Plastic Surgery is required.
  • Completion of fellowship training in burn surgery and/or pediatric surgery is required.
  • A minimum of 8–10 years of clinical experience in burn surgery, with demonstrated expertise in pediatric burn care, is required.
  • A minimum of 5 years of progressive leadership experience in clinical operations, physician management, or academic settings is required.
  • Board certification in general surgery, plastic surgery, or pediatric surgery by an appropriate certifying board, such as the American Board of Surgery or the American Board of Plastic Surgery, is required.
  • Eligibility for active and unrestricted medical licensure in the state of practice is required.
  • Eligibility for an active Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) registration is required.
  • Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers (BLS for HCP) and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certifications are required.
  • Credentialing and privileging by the medical staff in accordance with hospital bylaws are required.
  • A strong understanding of clinical operations, patient safety, quality improvement, and regulatory compliance is required.
  • Demonstrated experience managing budgets, staffing, and resource allocation is required.
  • A commitment to pediatric healthcare and a patient-first approach is required.
  • The ability to work in a fast-paced environment, manage multiple priorities, and respond to emergent issues is required.
Responsibilities
  • Serve as the primary administrative liaison between the Burns department and the hospital executive leadership team, ensuring effective communication and alignment on organizational objectives.
  • Ensure appropriate Medical Staff representation at Board of Governors meetings and Medical Staff involvement in Joint Conference Committee, Quality Assurance Committee, Medical Staff meetings, and other hospital and committee board meetings.
  • Ensure the Board of Governors is adequately informed of Medical Staff issues and activities.
  • Collaborate with local Medical Staff and other Chiefs of Staff to develop Medical Staff Bylaws and recommend changes and revisions for approval by the Joint Boards.
  • Support and implement hospital regulations and policies established by the Joint Boards and local Board of Governors, as appropriate.
  • Build, support, and grow relationships with sponsoring Shrine Temples and the Medical Staff.
  • Develop and maintain relationships within the wider medical community at local, regional, national, and international levels.
  • Manage physician workforce activities, including recruitment, credentialing, training, performance evaluations, and professional development.
  • Work with hospital administration and Headquarters to develop and manage the departmental budget, contracts, and operational expenditures, ensuring effective use of resources.
  • Oversee daily Burns department operations, including clinical scheduling, patient flow, staffing, and resource allocation.
  • Represent the Burns department on hospital committees and task forces, advocate for departmental interests, and contribute to hospital-wide initiatives.
  • Ensure processes support timely and accurate completion of medical records for efficient, quality clinical care, research, and meaningful-use compliance.
  • Support the Burns department in developing and implementing strategic plans, including growth initiatives, quality improvement, and clinical outcomes tracking.
  • Lead and monitor departmental quality improvement initiatives to enhance patient care, safety, and outcomes and ensure compliance with regulatory standards.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams, including surgeons, nurses, therapists, social workers, and support staff, to ensure coordinated patient care.
  • Oversee implementation of and adherence to clinical protocols, guidelines, and best practices, incorporating evidence-based practices into patient care.
  • Promote research within the Burns department and support faculty and staff in their academic and scholarly pursuits.
  • Supervise and support staff education and training programs, including resident and fellow education, continuing medical education (CME), and interdisciplinary team development.
  • Ensure compliance with legal, regulatory, and hospital-specific policies, including HIPAA, patient safety, and ethical standards.
  • Address patient or family concerns regarding treatment and care and facilitate resolution through appropriate channels.
  • Demonstrate quality and competency in performing the surgical specialty.
  • Modulate personal surgical activity to provide adequate leadership for the hospital's overall goals.
Desired Qualifications
  • An advanced degree in healthcare administration, business administration, public health, or a related field is preferred; examples include an MBA, MHA, or MPH.
  • Experience in academic medicine, research administration, or graduate medical education is preferred.

Shriners Children'S Boston Researchers Develop New Technology To Help Lessen Pain For Burn Patients

BOSTON, June 26, 2024 /PRNewswire/ -- Two researchers at Shriners Children's Boston have created a revolutionary new gel that can help alleviate pain for second-degree burn survivors during dressing changes. Learning about the anxiety and pain that many pediatric burn patients experienced when it was time for a dressing change, Dr. Aslihan Gokaltun, Ph.D., principal investigator, decided to find a way to make the process less scary and painful. She and associate investigator, O. Berk Usta, Ph.D., the Associate Professor of Surgery  Bioengineering at Harvard Medical School, began a hydrogel research study in 2020 and have now bioengineered a first-of-its-kind supramolecular hybrid hydrogel to help alleviate the stress and pain of the treatment process for burn survivors.
