Requirements
  • A completed application is required.
  • A master's degree in social work or an equivalent professional social work degree from an accredited graduate school of social work, such as family counseling, counseling, or psychology, is required.
  • One year of employment as a school social worker and one year of individual and group social work with children and families are required.
  • Knowledge of accessing community-based social services and resources is required.
  • Working knowledge of school social work principles, practices, and ethical standards; relevant state and federal laws, rules, and regulations; and applicable district policies is required.
  • A valid Arizona social worker license is required upon hire.
  • An Arizona IVP Fingerprint Clearance Card and background and criminal history clearance are required.
  • First Aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation certification are required.
  • The ability to multitask, communicate clearly verbally and in writing, concentrate for extended periods, remain seated for extended periods, prioritize and organize, exercise judgment under established procedures, communicate with district personnel at all levels, and work independently with limited supervision and as part of a team is required.
Responsibilities
  • Counsel scholars whose behavior or school progress indicates a need for individual or small-group support.
  • Provide crisis intervention.
  • Assist scholars with conflict resolution and anger-management strategies.
  • Help scholars develop appropriate social-emotional and interpersonal skills.
  • Assist scholars in understanding and accepting themselves and others.
  • Work with parents to facilitate support for their scholar's school adjustment.
  • Alleviate family stress so scholars can function more effectively in school and the community.
  • Assist parents in accessing programs available to scholars with special needs.
  • Assist parents in accessing and utilizing school and community resources.
  • Provide staff with essential information about cultural, societal, economic, familial, health, and other factors affecting a scholar's performance and behavior.
  • Assess scholars with mental health concerns.
  • Develop staff in-service training programs.
  • Assist teachers with behavior management.
  • Provide direct support to staff.
  • Collaborate with the school-based team to develop intervention strategies that increase academic success.
  • Obtain and coordinate community resources to meet scholars' needs.
  • Help school districts receive adequate support from social and mental health agencies.
  • Advocate for new and improved community and school services to meet the needs of students and families.
  • Help the system respond effectively to each scholar's needs.
  • Participate in exceptional-education assessment meetings and individual educational planning meetings.
  • Address problems in a scholar's living situation that affect adjustment in school, including home, school, and community factors.
  • Prepare a social or developmental history for a scholar with a disability.
  • Provide individual, group, and family counseling.
  • Mobilize family, school, and community resources to enable scholars to learn effectively in their educational programs.
  • Assist in developing positive behavioral intervention strategies.
  • Assist in developing and implementing educational programs for scholars requiring exceptional education.
  • Develop alternative programs for at-risk scholars.
  • Identify and report child abuse and neglect.
  • Provide case management for scholars and families requiring multiple resources.
Desired Qualifications
  • Two years of prior social work experience working with elementary and/or middle school scholars.
  • Prior experience with community collaborations.
  • Prior supervisory experience.
  • Prior experience with program development.
  • Bilingual English/Spanish.
