Requirements
  • Experience covering news for a newspaper or website, including breaking news and in-depth writing.
  • At least 1.5 years of experience working in a newsroom.
  • Ability to write AP Style news.
  • Working knowledge of Google Trends and search engine optimization.
  • Experience covering news on social media platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube.
  • Experience working in a fast-paced content production environment with tight deadlines and extensive multitasking.
  • Ability to work weekends and evenings and flexibility to cover shifts as needed.
  • Unrestricted work authorization to work in the United States.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Ability to work in Chicago, Illinois.
Responsibilities
  • Cover Chicago-area and Midwest news across web, app, social media, push alerts, video, and streaming platforms.
  • Report stories from the digital desk, especially breaking news, by gathering news through phone calls, verifying social media content, and working with field reporters.
  • Apply search engine optimization and Google Trends audience learnings to content.
  • Send push alerts, post to social media, clip video, and work sources during breaking news.
  • Drive audience growth across the organization’s platforms.
  • Address audience needs by platform, including website/app, television, FAST channel, social media, and YouTube, and determine how to break news on each.
  • Read audience trends, identify those most relevant to the audience, and use them to create content.
  • Produce content across multiple platforms in collaboration with the assignment desk, reporters, news staff, and independent sources.
  • Learn the audience for each platform and write and distribute content accordingly.
  • Identify buzz-worthy stories and engage the local audience across multiple platforms.
  • Create multimedia content, including video, live streams, and slideshows, to enhance daily news coverage.
  • Execute publishing workflows for video, images, and text.
  • Follow AP Style, editorial style guides, standards, and practices.
  • Coordinate with news producers to cross-promote on-air and online content.
  • Advocate for the audience in the newsroom and beyond.
Desired Qualifications
  • Working knowledge of content management and video editing tools.
  • At least one year of writing experience for a newspaper or news website.
  • In-depth knowledge of Chicago-area news and politics.
  • Wire service, newspaper rewrite, or digital news background.
  • Experience with social media, video editing, and slideshow creation.
  • Ability to write in both Spanish and English.
  • Experience telling stories through videos, photos, and multimedia packages.
