Requirements
  • A Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology or a related field is required, subject to possible case-by-case modification when minimum Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments requirements are met.
  • Three to five years of laboratory experience is required, including knowledge of routine and specialized procedures and tests in the assigned specialty area.
  • Certification in Medical Technology by a nationally recognized agency or board and/or certification in the specialized field of the assigned laboratory is required.
  • Assignment in Transfusion Service requires certification as a Specialist in Blood Banking.
  • Working knowledge of routine and specialized laboratory procedures and tests is required.
Responsibilities
  • Administer and coordinate technical activities and personnel in a specific segment of the Clinical Laboratories to ensure effective technical operation according to established practices.
  • Perform specialized procedures requiring advanced skill and theoretical knowledge.
  • Develop and implement quality control programs to ensure reliable testing procedures, proper laboratory equipment function, and compliance with federal regulations, and maintain related records.
  • Conduct proficiency evaluations by preparing and distributing unknown specimens or samples and evaluating the accuracy of solicited results.
  • Assist in developing and implementing laboratory testing methods, techniques, and procedures.
  • Set up and evaluate new laboratory equipment and make recommendations.
  • Standardize laboratory solutions and develop reagents used in diagnostic work.
  • Provide technical guidance and instruction in routine and advanced laboratory techniques.
  • Conduct formal training programs and workshops for medical technology students, faculty, staff, and other personnel.
  • Assist in planning and scheduling work to ensure appropriate assignment distribution and adequate staffing, space, and facilities.
  • Prepare technical reports and analyses describing work progress, adverse trends, recommendations, conclusions, and corrective actions.
  • Assist in developing and implementing a comprehensive marketing plan that achieves laboratory budget volumes.
  • Monitor testing to ensure acceptable levels of analytic performance are maintained.
  • Verify personnel competence before test reporting.
  • Ensure proficiency testing is followed, reviewed, and documented, including remedial actions after failures.
  • Establish, maintain, and evaluate quality assurance and quality control programs to identify problems.
  • Ensure procedure manuals are available and reviewed annually.
  • Ensure remedial action is taken and documented when test systems deviate from established performance specifications.
  • Ensure patient testing results are not reported until corrective action is complete and the test system is functioning properly.
  • Participate in annual evaluation, competency testing, and documentation for testing personnel.
  • Receive, review, and prepare technical reports on work volume, procedures used, and test results.
  • Coordinate reports and analyses describing progress, adverse trends, and appropriate corrective action.
  • Assist in the annual validation of the Electronic Laboratory Manual.
Desired Qualifications
  • At least five years of experience in Hematology is strongly preferred.
