About the job

Requirements
  • Five to ten or more years of designing control systems and programming equipment in a manufacturing environment.
  • Proven experience architecting electrical and control systems for robotic or automated cells end-to-end.
  • Strong programmable logic controller programming skills with Beckhoff, Siemens, Rockwell, or equivalent, and motion or drive integration.
  • Hands-on experience integrating robots and devices via EtherCAT, EtherNet/IP, PROFINET, OPC UA, MQTT, or REST.
  • Expertise in industrial safety, including risk and hazard assessment, performance-level evaluation, functional safety, and safety programmable logic controller programming.
  • Experience integrating shop-floor equipment with manufacturing execution systems, Factory OS, or an orchestrator.
  • Ability to take a problem from a blank page to a production-grade solution while working across stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated technical leadership through setting standards, mentoring, and owning a function.
Responsibilities
  • Design, implement, and own the controls layer of AI-driven autonomous cells.
  • Define hardware and software interfaces between devices and orchestrating or commanding software, including Factory OS, manufacturing execution systems, and AI.
  • Implement an AI-compatible safety schema with deterministic guardrails for stochastic command sources.
  • Own the end-to-end electronic architecture of cells, including power distribution, safety, input/output, motion, networking, and human-machine interfaces.
  • Own industrial electrical hardware design for power and communications panels, directly or via subcontractors.
  • Contribute to flexible conveyance design and the interfaces between conveyance and workstations.
  • Build a device-integration layer of drivers, adapters, schemas, and application programming interfaces so new tools can be onboarded quickly.
  • Define data contracts with the Factory OS team for commands, telemetry, alarms, traceability, and process data.
  • Lead safety design and compliance with ISO 13849, IEC 62061, NFPA 79, UL 508A, and CE.
  • Build and lead a small team of electrical, controls, and integration engineers.
Desired Qualifications
  • Working familiarity with ROS 2.
  • Experience interfacing with manufacturing execution systems or data systems.
  • Functional understanding of AI models for robotic control and what it takes to deploy them safely.
  • Software fluency beyond programmable logic controllers, such as Python, C#, C/C++, or Go.
  • Custom printed circuit board or embedded controller design experience.
  • Background in vision, force/torque, or precision motion.

About the company

Foundry Robotics develops AI-driven robotic systems and software for industrial manufacturing, focusing on electromechanical assembly. It combines robots, machine learning models, and a software-defined factory architecture where data and feedback continuously improve performance in high-throughput, high-mix environments. It distinguishes itself by targeting assembly automation rather than fabrication or consumer robots, emphasizing AI-first manufacturing, data integration, and programmable processes for observable, adaptable factories (including defense manufacturing). Its goal is to increase efficiency, adaptability, and scalability of industrial operations by making production programmable and data-driven.

What believers are saying

  • Foundry raised $19M seed in April 2026, led by Khosla Ventures.
  • Hiring 22 on-site roles signals aggressive buildout and active execution in Emeryville.
  • Recent job posts target Department of War and primes, opening large defense budgets.

What critics are saying

  • No shipped customers or revenue are public, so product-market fit remains unproven by October 2026.
  • Incumbents ABB, FANUC, KUKA, and Rockwell already dominate industrial assembly automation markets.
  • If deployments stall, the company becomes a capital-intensive lab without contract-manufacturing throughput.

What makes Foundry Robotics unique

  • Khosla-backed, AI-first contract manufacturer targeting electromechanical assembly, not consumer robotics.
  • Emeryville team hired 22 on-site roles, spanning robotics, manufacturing, software, and defense GTM.
  • Defense and dual-use positioning targets national-security-critical hardware and battery pack assembly.
