About the job

Requirements
  • At least 5 years of hardware engineering experience, including at least 2 years leading engineering teams.
  • A strong technical background in robotics, mechatronics, pneumatics, structural design, and design for manufacturing.
  • Experience taking hardware from prototype through production, including contract manufacturing and supply chain.
  • Experience building hardware for real-world deployment.
  • Strong project judgment across engineering capacity, customer timelines, cost, risk, and deployment constraints.
Responsibilities
  • Own the strategy and execution of the hardware and robotics roadmap in close partnership with Product Management.
  • Lead, mentor, and develop the hardware engineering team, keeping engineers focused and unblocked.
  • Drive technical decisions and architectural tradeoffs across complex hardware systems.
  • Establish lightweight engineering processes that improve execution, quality, and reliability.
  • Partner with Operations, Manufacturing, Field Service, and Software to resolve cross-functional issues.
  • Ensure machines can be manufactured, deployed, and supported reliably at scale.
  • Balance engineering capacity, customer timelines, deployment requirements, cost, and risk.
  • Step in as an individual contributor when needed to unblock critical technical challenges.
  • Review designs and provide architectural guidance; routine CAD ownership and day-to-day hardware design execution are not expected.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience at an early-stage startup with fewer than 50 employees.
  • Industrial automation, robotics, or heavy machinery experience.
  • Experience with hardware deployed across multiple customer sites.
  • Edge deployments or on-site hardware troubleshooting experience.

About the company

Glacier builds AI-powered robotic sorters and an AI data platform for recycling facilities (MRFs). The robots use computer vision to identify and sort over 30 material types from conveyor belts at about 45 items per minute and are lightweight, space-efficient, fitting in three feet of conveyor space and able to install in under a day. The data platform provides real-time insights into waste streams to optimize operations, improve bale purity, and align sorting with commodity pricing, while also helping brands measure the recyclability of their packaging at scale. Glacier differentiates itself by combining compact, affordable robotics with an analytics layer for easier retrofits and faster deployment, with the goal of increasing recycling efficiency and material recovery through data-driven decisions.

What believers are saying

  • Penn Waste deployed Glacier in 2026 with Waste Connections and Cox Enterprises.
  • Colgate and Glacier announced a partnership on September 22, 2025, validating brand demand.
  • Amazon Climate Pledge Fund backs Glacier, and Amazon pilots biomaterial sortation with it.

What critics are saying

  • AMP Robotics raised up to $75 million in June 2026, intensifying price pressure.
  • Glacier depends on MRF capex cycles; budget freezes at Recology or Waste Connections stall growth.
  • If brands stop funding packaging analytics, Glacier's hardware-sales engine loses its highest-margin data wedge.

What makes Glacier unique

  • Fast Company named Glacier No. 1 Robotics & Engineering company in March 2026.
  • Glacier installs in under a day, needing only three feet of conveyor space.
  • Glacier processes ~10% of U.S. household waste streams across real MRFs in 2026.

Inside Amazon’S Sustainability Lab: Grueling Tests Forge The Future Of Planet-Friendly Plastics

Lexi Maerz, a materials engineer with Amazon’s sustainability lab in Seattle, using a device that turns pellets of plant-based plastic into films. (GeekWire Photo / Lisa Stiffler)In its pursuit of planet-friendly plastics, Amazon is putting candidate materials through a series of devices that recall medieval torture methods. Plastic films are slowly stretched to the point of breaking. They’re sliced with a blade on tiny pendulum, poked until they puncture. At the Amazon sustainability lab — an uncluttered, windowless space in the industrial zone south of Seattle’s sports stadiums — researchers are testing new plant-based “biopolyesters” that could one day be used in carrot bags, potato chip packages and clamshell containers for fresh berries. While a significant challenge, Amazon’s ambitions in this sphere extend well beyond the development of green plastics. The tech and retail giant is reimagining the entire food packaging system from materials, to waste collection, to recycling and reuse of the environmental plastics. The goal is an easy-to-use, cost-competitive, scalable solution that will speed the transition away from fossil fuel-based plastics that harm the climate and add to the glut of plastic pollution around the globe

Glacier raises $16M for recycling robots

Amazon-backed Glacier has raised $16 million in a Series A round to expand its robotic recycling fleet. The funding, led by Ecosystem Integrity Fund, will help Glacier deploy its computer vision-controlled robotic arms, which can identify over 30 material types, to more cities. The company aims to address staffing challenges in materials recovery facilities, where high turnover rates make it difficult to meet increasing recycling demands.
