About the job

Requirements
  • A Ph.D. in biochemistry, protein engineering, molecular biology, immunology, or a related field, plus 6 or more years of relevant industry experience, or equivalent experience.
  • Hands-on leadership of antibody or protein engineering programs from discovery or design through characterization.
  • Deep experience with recombinant protein expression, purification, and analytical characterization.
  • Experience with bioconjugation and labeling chemistries.
  • A track record of taking a protein reagent or biologic from development into reproducible production, with defined specifications and quality control.
  • Experience managing contract research organizations or external partners for antibody discovery, engineering, or production.
  • Experience guiding or mentoring scientists and research associates.
  • Comfort working in an early-stage startup with evolving priorities.
Responsibilities
  • Drive protein reagent development by setting the scientific strategy for proteins in consumables, from selection and engineering through characterization.
  • Develop protein-development workflows by driving discovery, engineering, and optimization programs, whether run in-house or with external partners.
  • Build protein production and conjugation processes by establishing robust expression, purification, labeling, and conjugation methods, and scaling them to supply the product.
  • Establish protein quality control and stability by defining specifications and analytical methods for identity, purity, activity, and stability, and driving lot-to-lot consistency.
  • Manage contract research organizations and manufacturing partners by selecting and directing antibody-discovery, engineering, and protein-manufacturing partners; scoping work, conducting diligence, and transferring methods while protecting intellectual property.
  • Mentor scientists and research associates and set the standard for rigorous, well-documented work.
  • Partner with surface, cell, hardware, and software teams so protein reagents and assay readouts fit together.
  • Identify inventions and contribute to disclosures and patent filings.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience with antibodies or protein reagents for diagnostics, cell selection, or cell-therapy applications.
  • Experience with protein immobilization on surfaces or biosensors.
  • Experience applying computational or artificial-intelligence-assisted protein design.
  • Familiarity with good manufacturing practices or quality systems for reagents or biologics.

About the company

Exthymic develops a point‑of‑care manufacturing platform to democratize autologous cell therapies by moving production from centralized facilities to near the patient, at or around treatment centers. The platform aims to streamline the logistics-heavy process of taking a patient’s cells, manufacturing a personalized therapy (such as CAR‑T) locally, and delivering it back, thereby cutting turnaround times and costs. The team draws on founder Rich Stoner’s background in biomanufacturing, genome engineering, and big‑space biotech startups, focusing on a decentralized approach to cell therapy bioprocessing. While details are sparse, the company has a patent tied to microfluidic devices for high‑throughput single‑cell analysis, suggesting a direction toward compact, scalable manufacturing tools. Exthymic aims to broaden patient access to personalized therapies by reducing logistics hurdles and bringing production closer to where patients are treated.

What believers are saying

  • ARPA-H awarded up to $25 million on 2026-09-21 for two years.
  • UCSF and Gates Institute joined SCOPE, strengthening translational credibility and clinical access.
  • Meeting on the Mesa selected Exthymic for an October 6, 2026 spotlight.

What critics are saying

  • EXT-001 and LITTLESTAR remain unproven; any process failure blocks 2028 clinical trials.
  • Community-hospital manufacturing faces FDA, GMP, and hospital-network adoption hurdles that kill rollout.
  • Bluebird Bio and Legend Biotech already control CAR-T physician attention and payer precedent.

What makes Exthymic unique

  • Rich Stoner's Exthymic pairs hospital-based cell manufacturing with adaptive control and in-line characterization.
  • The SCOPE program funds LITTLESTAR, targeting CAR-T production without dedicated cleanrooms or QC labs.
  • Public filings emphasize point-of-care autologous therapy, not another centralized CDMO platform.
