Requirements
  • 4+ years of experience in brand design, design systems, product design, or a related field
  • A deep command of visual identity: quick to sense when something’s off, and able to diagnose and resolve it systematically
  • Strong Figma skills, including building and maintaining design systems, libraries, and component structures others actually use
  • Fluent in typography, layout, and the details that separate considered design from competent design
  • Experience writing and scaling AI skills, not just prompting, but structuring reference frameworks, markdown files, and instruction sets that produce reliably on-brand outputs
  • Comfortable vibe-coding: you've built lightweight apps, generators, or custom tools for design use cases, and you know where the edges are
  • AI is already part of how you work, not something you're experimenting with; you've used tools like Claude, Codex, Krea, Midjourney, or similar and you’re curious about what’s next.
  • You see the forest and the tree(s): if given a recurring design problem, your instinct is to build something comprehensive, not just solve it once
  • A natural collaborator with low ego and high empathy: you work well across teams and can translate between design thinking and the needs of people who don't speak it
Responsibilities
  • Take clear ownership of the a16z design systems function: setting the direction, maintaining the standards, and being accountable for what gets built and how well it works
  • Translate a16z brand systems into scalable templates, components, and modular frameworks across Krea, Figma, Google Workspace, Claude, Codex, Gamma, and many other core platforms with enough command of the brand to make those systems feel designed, not just functional
  • Build repeatable systems for high-volume design needs (presentations, social assets, event materials, charts) so these don't require a designer every time
  • Write and maintain markdown-based brand documentation, style references, and skill instruction files that serve as the source of truth for AI-generated outputs
  • Build high-functioning AI skills from scratch: structured prompts, reference frameworks, and training inputs that produce design work that's distinctly and consistently a16z
  • Vibe-code lightweight apps and custom tools purpose-built for design use cases (generators, formatters, asset builders, etc.) using whatever combination of AI models, APIs, and front-end code gets the job done
  • Create tools and templates that let non-designers produce polished, on-brand work independently, without the output looking like it came from a template
  • Partner with designers to distill complex visual systems into usable building blocks, and keep those systems current as the brand evolves
  • Spot patterns in repeatable work, build toward them, and continuously improve what's running based on real usage and feedback
  • Occasionally train people across the firm on the tools and systems we build (whether that's written documentation, a quick video walkthrough, or a 1:1) so what we make actually gets used the way it was intended
  • Work with the project manager and new media ops team to track adoption and efficiency gains across the firm

Andrewsen Horowitz (a16z) is a venture capital firm that provides funding and strategic help to startups. It invests across many sectors, including AI, fintech, biotech, crypto, enterprise, consumer, games, and infrastructure, and it supports companies from seed stages through to IPOs. The firm’s product is capital in the form of equity stakes in startups, along with guidance, networks, and operational support to help these companies scale. Unlike many investors who focus on a single niche, a16z combines a very large capital base (about $43 billion in committed capital) with a broad portfolio and a long-term, hands-on approach to backing entrepreneurs, aiming to grow companies that can become industry leaders while delivering strong returns for its investors.

Tech billionaires pour $3B into Berkeley AI mining firm hunting data centre materials

OpenAI co-founder Sam Altman and fellow billionaires Jeff Bezos, Bill Gates and Mark Zuckerberg are investing in Berkeley-based KoBold Metals, which uses artificial intelligence to find critical minerals for data centres and electric vehicles. The company, valued at nearly $3 billion, is now the second-most valuable tech firm in Berkeley. KoBold employs AI to locate copper, lithium, nickel and cobalt deposits. In April, it broke ground in Zambia on what may be one of the world's largest copper deposits, one of 60 projects across 14 countries. The firm has also announced the largest lithium exploration in history in the Democratic Republic of Congo, spanning 3,000 square kilometres. However, some mining executives question whether KoBold's technology truly discovered the Zambian deposit and highlight technical challenges in extracting ore from deep underground. The Trump administration has supported KoBold's operations through foreign policy initiatives aimed at securing US access to critical minerals.

Silicon Valley VCs back Saudi fintech as market shifts from emerging to proven

Saudi Arabia's fintech sector is attracting major Silicon Valley investors, signalling the market has matured from emerging opportunity to proven growth story. Andreessen Horowitz recently invested $25 million in Saudi startup Stitch, marking its first GCC deal, whilst General Catalyst, Sequoia Capital and PayPal Ventures have backed other Saudi fintechs. Digital payments now account for 79% of retail transactions in Saudi Arabia, with licensed fintech firms jumping from 80 in 2022 to over 280 by mid-2025. The sector is valued at $2.85 billion in 2025 and forecast to reach $5.28 billion by 2030. International investors now represent over half of Saudi venture capital participants, up from under a fifth in 2020. Experts say the real opportunity lies in infrastructure rather than consumer apps, with open banking and cross-border payment systems positioning Saudi fintech as a bridge between emerging trade corridors.

Unconventional AI raises $475M at $4.5B seed valuation to cut AI power costs by 1,000 times

Unconventional AI has raised $475 million at a $4.5 billion valuation in what's framed as the largest seed round ever, backed by Andreessen Horowitz, Lightspeed and Sequoia Capital. The company, founded by Naveen Rao, is developing oscillator-based chips that could reduce AI inference power consumption by up to 1,000 times. The pre-revenue startup released Un-0, an image generation model running on a simulation of its architecture, as proof the approach can replicate conventional AI workloads. Unconventional plans to release chip schematics soon, targeting a system-on-chip tape-in in 2026 and mass delivery in 2027. Rao previously co-founded Nervana Systems, acquired by Intel for $400 million, and MosaicML, acquired by Databricks for $1.3 billion. The funding addresses growing concerns about AI's energy consumption, with data centres projected to exceed 1,000 TWh by late 2026.

US Army awards $99M contract to startup for combat logistics that work when satellites are jammed

The US Army has awarded Rune Technologies a five-year, $99 million indefinite delivery, indefinite quantity contract for its TyrOS logistics platform, which addresses a critical weakness in military supply chains: the ability to function when satellite communications are jammed. TyrOS is designed to operate offline on laptops in forward positions under electronic attack, synchronising data when connectivity returns via radio, satellite or cellular networks. The platform integrates fuel, ammunition, food and spare parts inventory with vehicle status, transport routes, terrain threats and weather data, generating automated resupply recommendations. The system is already deployed with the 25th Infantry Division, 4th Infantry Division, XVIII Airborne Corps and Marine Corps units. Rune previously raised $24 million in Series A funding led by Human Capital, with participation from Andreessen Horowitz and Point72 Ventures.
