Planet launches Suncatcher, Tanager-2, and 18 superdove satellites.

Planet launches Suncatcher, Tanager-2, and 18 superdove satellites. SAN FRANCISCO / Oct 01, 2026 / Business Wire / Planet Labs PBC (NYSE: PL), a leading provider of daily data and insights about change on Earth, today announced the successful launch of 20 satellites: the first demo mission for Google's Project Suncatcher; Tanager-2, its latest hyperspectral satellite; and 18 SuperDoves. The spacecraft were launched to orbit aboard the Transporter-18 rideshare mission with SpaceX from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California. Planet has successfully made initial contact with Tanager-2, the Project Suncatcher prototype, and two SuperDoves and begun the commissioning process. Planet expects to make contact with the remaining 16 SuperDoves that will deploy on the D-Orbit ION orbital transfer vehicle on schedule. This marks Planet's 40th successful launch and a total of 718 satellites built and delivered on orbit. Developed in partnership with Google, the Project Suncatcher satellite will run the first-ever test of Google's Tensor Processing Units (TPUs) in space. The moonshot project is exploring the feasibility of running machine learning (ML) compute systems in-orbit. Developed in partnership with Carbon Mapper, Tanager-2 features best-in-class hyperspectral VSWIR (Visible, Near-infrared and Short-wave infrared) imaging capabilities. With a cutting-edge, adjustable sensitivity imaging spectroscopy payload onboard, Tanager is designed to capture imagery in 426 contiguous bands with ~5 nm spectral resolution at 30 m spatial resolution. This configuration makes Tanager an ideal sensor for detecting methane emissions and a myriad of hyperspectral applications such as rare-earth element (REE) identification, water quality analysis, and agricultural intelligence. Planet continues to work with Carbon Mapper to scale the fleet, with plans to build and deploy at least three additional Tanager satellites following Tanager-2. The 18 SuperDoves of Flock 4J will supplement PlanetScope, Planet's flagship near-daily, global monitoring mission, which provides consistent global coverage across millions of square kilometers for customers in commercial enterprise, civil government, and defense and intelligence sectors. With more launches ahead, Planet continues to expand its constellations to meet global customer demand across satellite services, data and vertically-integrated geospatial intelligence solutions, and more. Planet Labs' Pelican-12 satellite arrives at Cape Canaveral for SpaceX Bandwagon-5 launch

Planet Labs announced its Pelican-12 satellite has arrived at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station ahead of launch on SpaceX's Bandwagon-5 rideshare mission. The second-generation satellite features 30cm optical resolution, on-orbit AI edge computing via NVIDIA Jetson, and a steerable antenna for intersatellite data relay. This marks Planet's fifth Pelican launch of 2026, shipped less than three months after Pelican-11. The enhanced imagery resolution and real-time AI processing strengthen Planet's offering for defence, agriculture and infrastructure clients. The deployment demonstrates Planet's rapid engineering capability whilst reinforcing SpaceX's dominance in commercial launch services. However, both companies face challenges from heavy capital expenditure requirements and execution risks tied to constellation deployment and operational costs.

Planet's Pelican-12 satellite arrives at launch site.

Planet's Pelican-12 satellite arrives at launch site. SAN FRANCISCO / Sep 25, 2026 / Business Wire / Planet Labs PBC (NYSE: PL), a leading provider of daily data and insights about change on Earth, today announced that Pelican-12, an updated second generation (Gen 2) high resolution Pelican(TM), has arrived at the Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida ahead of its launch aboard the upcoming Bandwagon-5 rideshare mission with SpaceX. Pelican-12 leverages key learnings from Pelican-11, which launched in July. Shipping less than three months later with updates to the payload and communication systems, Pelican-12 demonstrates Planet's end-to-end agile engineering. Like its predecessors, Pelican-12 will allow Planet to test and validate new technologies ahead of integration on future Planet spacecraft. Planet is working to test commercial data relay services onboard its constellations to minimize latency in its delivery of data to customers. This Pelican satellite is designed to support intersatellite communications using a steerable antenna, and aims to enable two-way communications at higher data rates than the 1 Mbps achieved in an initial demonstration in 2025. While Planet's first generation (Gen 1) Pelicans are designed to capture 50 cm class imagery, Gen 2 Pelicans are designed to provide up to 30 cm class imagery - further improving use cases such as agricultural monitoring, critical infrastructure management, and natural disaster response. Pelican-12 is also equipped with the NVIDIA Jetson platform to accelerate on-orbit edge compute, a capability Planet demonstrated by running AI-driven, near real-time object detection onboard Pelican-4. By utilizing its onboard NVIDIA Jetson module, Pelican-12 will help Planet explore new ways to close the latency gap with real-time insights, reduce downlink costs, and continue building towards a future of planetary-scale Earth intelligence. Pelican-12 will be the fifth Pelican to launch in 2026, showing the rapid expansion of this next-generation, high-resolution constellation. Planet is continuing to scale its Pelican production capacity, with manufacturing at its expanded Berlin facility set to begin this year. Planet plans to launch additional Pelican spacecraft in 2027 to continue to meet growing customer demand for Planet's high-resolution data products and Satellite Services offerings. Planet launches Amazon.ia with $14M+ Bezos Earth Fund support to track biodiversity using AI and satellite data

Planet Labs has launched Amazon.ia, a multi-partner initiative using satellite data and AI to monitor biodiversity across the Amazon rainforest. The Bezos Earth Fund granted more than $14M to support the project through the Andes Amazon Fund and World Resources Institute. Amazon.ia combines satellite imagery with ground-level data to track changes in biodiversity and ecosystem health at unprecedented scale. The platform aims to provide scientists, conservation organisations, governments, and local communities with timely intelligence to inform conservation and restoration efforts. The initiative addresses the challenge of monitoring biodiversity across the vast Amazon region. By delivering fast, accurate data, Amazon.ia will help conservationists identify hazards sooner, measure programme effectiveness, and make better-informed decisions to protect one of Earth's most diverse ecosystems.
