- A high school diploma or General Educational Development (GED) credential is required.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is required.
- Assist clinical staff in caring for patients.
- Prepare patients for stress testing procedures and assist with patient observation.
- Maintain clean examination rooms, stock supplies, answer phones, and perform front-office and related duties.
- Take direction for patient-care activities from a registered professional nurse, complete assignment records, and submit them for review.
- Check daily for each patient's identification band and replace it as needed.
- Provide personal care, including bed making, bathing, foot care, oral hygiene, skin care, back care, and shaving male patients, and document the care provided.
- Feed or assist patients with meals and report eating patterns to the clinical nurse.
- Measure and report patients' blood pressure, temperature, pain level, respiration, pulse rate, oxygen saturation, and weight.
- Measure and report patients' oral fluid intake and output to the nurse.
- Collect routine urine, stool, and sputum specimens, excluding specimens collected through suctioning.
- Perform and correctly label 12-lead electrocardiograms (EKGs).
- Perform phlebotomy by finger stick or venipuncture for blood specimen collection and laboratory analysis.
- Perform bedside glucose monitoring, obtain results using a meter, and report them to the nurse for visual verification.
- Care for epicardial pacing wires by isolating and insulating them, providing site care, and applying dressings.
- Paint and clean approximated incisions.
- Follow Standard Precautions and infection prevention and control practices.
- Check the integrity and quantity of equipment and supplies and respond appropriately to patient or environmental emergencies.
- Perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) as directed.
- Participate in the Falls Prevention Program by using restraint alternatives correctly, explaining fall-prevention measures to patients, promoting safety, and performing intentional rounding.
- Respond promptly to call bells, bed-check alarms, and cardiac-monitor alarms.
- Participate in pressure-ulcer prevention by turning and positioning patients, applying lotions and moisture barriers, using pressure-relief devices, and applying and releasing restraints safely and correctly.
- Accompany and transport patients being admitted, transferred, or discharged as directed by the clinical nurse.
