Requirements
  • Previous pharmaceutical or biotechnology experience is mandatory.
  • At least 5 years of experience in commissioning, qualification, or validation of clean utility systems within the pharmaceutical or biotechnology industry.
  • Knowledge of current Good Manufacturing Practice operations and requirements.
  • Expertise in the generation, storage, and distribution of pharmaceutical-grade water systems.
  • Hands-on experience with industrial utilities, including compressed air generation and distribution, ammonia chillers, electro boilers, chilled water generation and distribution, cooling water generation and distribution, chilled glycol generation and distribution, and cooling towers.
  • Hands-on experience with clean utilities, including Purified Water generation, Water For Injection generation, and Clean Steam generation.
  • Hands-on experience with heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning systems, including air handling units, dedicated outdoor air systems, blower coil units, air curtains, computer room air-conditioning units, and direct-expansion cooling units.
  • An engineering degree is required.
  • Ability to handle multiple projects in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong multitasking skills.
  • Ability to comply with client safety rules, including mandatory COVID-19 vaccination policies where applicable.
Responsibilities
  • Provide technical guidance for the design, installation, commissioning, qualification, start-up, and operation of pharmaceutical and biopharmaceutical facilities and clean utilities.
  • Lead the development of design, technology-selection, engineering, commissioning, and qualification deliverables, including process flow diagrams, piping and instrumentation diagrams, specifications, equipment and distribution-loop layouts, design qualification, factory acceptance testing, commissioning test plans and checklists, installation qualification, operational qualification, and performance qualification.
  • Support detailed design development and field installation, and execute commissioning and qualification test cases and protocols in the field.
  • Serve as a technical subject-matter expert on the design and operation of clean utilities, including their regulatory requirements, mechanical specifications, and industry best practices and guidelines.
  • Lead design, procurement, field installation, commissioning, and qualification processes throughout the project lifecycle to ensure timely completion and compliance with quality and engineering specifications.
  • Support development of Project Validation Plans to ensure the system test action plan is applicable and relevant.
  • Coordinate cross-functional meetings to drive design reviews, project progress, decisions, and updates.
  • Travel occasionally for meetings with equipment fabrication vendors or factory acceptance testing.
  • Provide occasional support during shutdowns or extended hours, particularly during installation, construction, commissioning, qualification, and validation phases.
  • Visit construction and installation sites while wearing required personal protective equipment.
  • Maintain key client relationships in support of business development and pursuit of new work.
  • Support project scheduling and budgeting.
  • Coordinate client and consulting-firm resources for effective project delivery.
  • Provide technical support to sales for proposals and opportunities.
  • Present at industry conferences and publish papers when applicable.
  • Supervise contractors during critical testing of systems and equipment.
  • Perform other duties assigned by the client or consulting firm based on workload and project requirements.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience developing and executing validation projects using risk-based commissioning and qualification approaches such as ASTM E2500 or ISPE ICQ.
  • Experience commissioning and qualifying process control systems.
  • Leadership experience, including leading teams, managing staff priorities, providing mentorship and oversight, and helping staff resolve issues.
  • Ability to take initiative and lead projects involving multiple stakeholders, departments, and varying levels of complexity.
  • Mentorship skills to coach and develop junior and intermediate employees.
  • Occasional travel availability.
