Tariffs, diesel and chips add about $2B in costs each for GM and Ford this year

General Motors, Ford, and Stellantis reported higher revenue this quarter, driven by sales of big cars and trucks. But rising costs for steel, copper, computer chips, and diesel are squeezing them. GM and Ford each expect these costs, which some companies label "commodity and logistics," to add about $2 billion this year. Analysts say the term largely stands in for tariffs and inflation. EV sales have fallen since the federal tax credit ended, though GM says it is not giving up on them. Hybrid sales are up almost 27%, according to Edmunds. Meanwhile, Exxon doubled its earnings and Chevron's rose 180%, as wars in Iran and Ukraine disrupted oil supply.

US and Canada near deal to ease steel and auto tariffs, easing $2B Ford cost

The US and Canada are working on a deal to ease US tariffs on Canadian steel and autos, Reuters reported on Monday. Steel faces tariffs of up to 50% and autos 25%. Nothing is signed, and US sources said Washington wants more concessions. A deal would cut a recurring cost for Ford and General Motors (GM). Ford's net tariff cost was about $2 billion in 2025; GM expects $2.5 billion to $3.5 billion of gross tariff costs in 2026. It could also head off a rise to 50% on Canadian steel and autos set for January 1, 2027. Ford reports third-quarter results today. Investors will watch whether it holds its $10 billion to $11 billion adjusted EBIT guidance.

Tariffs, chips and diesel add $2B in costs for Ford and GM despite strong truck sales

US automakers reported higher third-quarter revenue, but say costs are climbing. Steel, copper, computer chips and diesel have all become pricier, partly because of tariffs the Trump administration has imposed since 2025. General Motors expects materials and diesel to cost it as much as $2 billion this year, and it still pays about $2.5 billion in tariffs. Ford expects a year-over-year headwind of about $2 billion from commodities, memory chips and logistics. Stellantis will give more detail in the fourth quarter. Demand remains firm. GM's light-duty truck sales rose 9%, and Stellantis' US pickup sales rose 34%. The average new vehicle price was just over $50,000 in September. Electric vehicle sales fell after the $7,500 federal tax credit ended, while hybrid sales rose 27%.

Six high-yield dividend stocks fail the payout test, from Ford to Whirlpool's 9.37% mirage

High dividend yields can hide weak payouts, and a four-step test helps separate real income from traps. It checks earnings with one-offs stripped out, full-year free cash flow against dividends, management's explanation, and whether debt funds the gap. Ford yields 4.99% and shows a trailing EPS of -$1.88, caused by $4.2B in one-time charges. Its debt-to-equity of 4.66 leaves the $0.60 dividend exposed to a downturn. Pfizer yields 6.03%, but its free cash flow yield is 5.60%. Clorox's roughly $405M of free cash flow fell short of about $601M in dividends. Whirlpool fails every step. It cut its quarterly dividend from $1.75 to $0.90 in 2025, paid no common dividend in the second quarter of 2026, and its shares are down 59.48% since the end of 2025. 3M and Dow pass, with payouts now covered by cash.
