Requirements
  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Excellent reading, writing, and communication skills are required.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology is required.
  • At least one year of experience as a Unit Clerk is preferred.
  • Basic Life Support certification is required upon hire.
Responsibilities
  • Provide clerical services to patient care units using independent judgment.
  • Transcribe orders correctly.
  • File all reports.
  • Maintain the patient log book.
  • Review charts daily.
  • Arrange transportation and follow-up or outside tests.
  • Maintain current professional licenses and certifications when required by the state, regulatory agency, or hospital.
  • Protect hospital resources through appropriate and careful use of supplies and equipment.
  • Perform clerical duties related to admissions, transfers, discharges, and deaths.
  • Receive and handle phone calls appropriately, and record and communicate messages accurately and promptly.
  • Practice Standard Precautions when providing patient and hospital services.
  • Respond promptly and appropriately to patient call lights or requests, referring patient needs to appropriate staff.
  • Respond appropriately in emergency situations and follow established emergency procedures and practices.
  • Respect and maintain patient rights, privacy, confidentiality, and dignity when providing services.
  • Apply hospital environment-of-care requirements related to safety, security, emergency preparedness, hazardous materials and waste, life safety, medical equipment, and utility systems.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of equipment capabilities, limitations, and appropriate or special applications.
  • Access and use hospital computer systems according to established guidelines and follow applicable information-system policies and procedures.
  • Comply with hospital policies and procedures, including timekeeping, dress code, attendance, and standards of conduct.
  • Maintain required education and in-service requirements and participate in departmental staff meetings through attendance or review of meeting minutes.
  • Attend the mandatory ethics program and conduct hospital business ethically.
  • Communicate respectfully, confidentially, and collaboratively with physicians, administrative staff, coworkers, patients, and families.
  • Follow the organizational chain of command when notifying appropriate personnel about patient-care or service issues.
  • Perform responsibilities professionally and flexibly while providing patient care and service.
  • Organize workload, set priorities, use time efficiently, and maintain a clean and uncluttered environment.
  • Give and receive feedback professionally.
  • Assist with unit projects and take initiative during downtime.
  • Assist with orienting new staff.
