Requirements
  • Graduation from an accredited high school or GED program.
  • Two years of work-related experience.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing, and to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, departments, and the public.
  • Must hold current Red Cross First Aid/CPR certification or obtain it within 90 days of hire.
  • Must complete 40 hours of training yearly and hold certifications required by applicable facility or department standards.
  • Must possess a valid Texas driver’s license and a good driving record.
  • Must pass an extensive background investigation.
  • Must complete mandatory drug testing before employment and be subject to random, unannounced drug and/or alcohol testing during employment.
  • Must be able to work shift changes, mandatory overtime, or an additional shift as operationally required; the role may require holdovers or callbacks as essential personnel.
  • Must tolerate an emotionally demanding and stressful environment while working with juveniles who may have committed dangerous or aggressive acts.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age where applicable and pass all physical and written portions of the Juvenile Academy, or meet applicable PREA and Ethics standards.
  • Must be physically able to perform handling-with-care techniques, including takedowns, chasing, and restraining youths, as required by the Texas Juvenile Justice Department.
  • The role involves working inside a secured facility with potential exposure to hepatitis, tuberculosis, lice, and other diseases.
Responsibilities
  • Provide direct day-to-day supervision of youths in a 24-hour detention facility to ensure each youth’s health, safety, and welfare.
  • Function as a lead Juvenile Detention Officer and assume divisional responsibility in the shift supervisor’s absence.
  • Provide individual and group counseling to promote youths’ awareness of their responsibilities and alternatives.
  • Exercise sound judgment during crises or potentially dangerous situations, conduct crisis intervention counseling, and notify the supervisor of concerns.
  • Enforce facility rules, document youths’ behavior and other relevant information, and forward documentation to appropriate personnel.
  • Train and evaluate staff and maintain time and attendance records in the shift supervisor’s absence.
  • Transport youths to and from appointments.
  • Provide staff backup and perform duties as needed, including administering medications, transporting youths, processing intake assessments or discharges, and disciplining youths.
  • Conduct inspections, rounds, and drills, including room checks and physical searches of youths.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Restrain or chase youths and use a vehicle to transport youths when required.
