Requirements
  • A quantitatively oriented advanced degree, or a commensurate amount of relevant experience without an advanced degree.
  • Substantial relevant experience using empirical tools to make rigorous, evidence-based decisions in the real world.
  • Typically 5–10 years of post-graduate work experience prior to joining GiveWell.
  • Ability to combine rigorous evidence review, cost-effectiveness modeling, discussions with subject matter experts, contextual understanding, and judgment.
  • Ability to communicate research findings clearly to external audiences and donors.
  • Availability for a work schedule with some overlap with American working hours and the schedules of key coworkers for international employment.
Responsibilities
  • Create and lead ambitious research agendas.
  • Set research priorities by identifying the questions that matter most to GiveWell’s funding decisions.
  • Execute research agendas through empirical evidence review, cost-effectiveness modeling, discussions with subject matter experts, contextual analysis, and judgment.
  • Inform high-impact grantmaking decisions and the allocation of funding to grantees.
  • Communicate externally about GiveWell’s research and findings.
  • Mentor and advise other members of the team.
  • Assess uncertainty in cost-effectiveness estimates and determine how it should affect funding recommendations.
  • Attend occasional international site visits and conferences and participate in quarterly whole-organization and department retreats as applicable.

  • Ability to identify important questions, investigate them deeply where useful, and reassess mental models based on evidence.
  • Ability to continually assess whether the team is working on the most important questions.
  • Interest in transitioning to a Senior Program Officer role or taking on people-management responsibilities as a potential future career pathway.

GiveWell is a nonprofit research organization that identifies and recommends charities working in global health and poverty alleviation based on how much good they do per dollar. Founded in 2007, it evaluates programs by gathering independent evidence, building cost-effectiveness models, interviewing staff, conducting site visits, and monitoring results, producing over 70,000 hours of research a year. It publishes a short annual list of top charities plus detailed reports and offers donation funds—Top Charities, All Grants, and Unrestricted—while charging no fees to donors or charities.
