- Graduation from an accredited Health Information Management diploma or bachelor program.
- Five years of recent, related experience coding inpatient and surgical day care records in a tertiary setting, including two years as a data analytics or data quality analyst, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
- Current Canadian College of Health Information Management certification and active membership with the Canadian Association of Health Information Management.
- A valid British Columbia driver's license.
- Understanding of quality assurance techniques and processes related to continuous quality improvement.
- Knowledge of and ability to use report writer tools such as Crystal Reports design and Microsoft SQL Server.
- Ability to code in ICD-10-CA and CCI and abstract records in the Canadian Institute for Health Information Discharge Abstract Database.
- Knowledge of Case Mix Groups, Comprehensive Ambulatory Classification System, Resource Intensity Weight and Expected Length of Stay.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint and ability to use these applications.
- Ability to develop learning materials and tools.
- Ability to organize and prioritize workload.
- Ability to solve problems.
- Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
- Ability to work to deadlines under pressure, with minimal supervision and frequent interruptions.

- Lead coding standards and data quality initiatives, providing expert guidance to health information management coders and staff on coding processes, patient record standards and related practices.
- Develop, maintain and deliver training programs and materials for new hires, practicum and co-op students, and returning staff to ensure consistent application of coding standards.
- Act as the primary liaison with the Canadian Institute for Health Information, the British Columbia Renal Cell Pathway, the British Columbia Trauma Registry and other databases; manage coding queries, implement new or revised standards and communicate updates to relevant stakeholders.
- Collaborate with Coding Coordinators, leadership, health information management teams and reporting and analytics units to ensure the accuracy and integrity of coded patient data and alignment with Ministry of Health and Canadian Institute for Health Information requirements.
- Develop and maintain policies, procedures and manuals related to coding standards and data quality, and oversee quality audit processes using evidence-based quality improvement methodologies.
- Support recruitment and staff development by assisting in the creation of coding proficiency assessments, identifying data quality issues and recommending targeted training initiatives.
- Work with cross-functional teams and participate in program development to ensure codified data supports emerging healthcare delivery models.
- Provide on-site support as needed and perform other related duties.
