Requirements
- Graduate of a Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE)-accredited nursing program with a Master’s Degree in Nursing or Medical Education and Certification (MEC)-approved equivalent.
- National certification by one of the recognized Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) certification centers.
- Licensure or eligibility for licensure as a professional Registered Nurse and Advanced Practice Registered Nurse in West Virginia.
- American Heart Association Neonatal Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is required, with additional Advanced Life Support training at the department’s discretion, such as Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) and/or Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP).
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree as a Physician Assistant is required.
- Graduate of an Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA)-approved Physician Assistant training program is required.
- Certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants is required.
- Licensure or eligibility for licensure by the West Virginia Board of Medicine or West Virginia Board of Osteopathic Medicine.
- Proficiency with computers.
- Strong communication skills.
- Ability to provide healthcare services consistent with state law and the requirements of the applicable professional licensing or certification authority and/or hospital privileges.
Responsibilities
- Provide high-quality, patient-centered care as a member of the interdisciplinary healthcare team.
- Assess, diagnose, treat, and manage patients within the scope of practice and area of specialty.
- Deliver evidence-based care, promote positive patient outcomes, maintain professional and regulatory standards, and support the clinical, educational, and operational goals of the department and organization.
- Complete comprehensive patient health evaluations, including biological, social, and psychological assessments, while considering comorbid conditions and overall disposition.
- Assess and coordinate the educational and psychosocial needs of patients and caretakers.
- Develop and review plans of care with the clinical team, participate in directing care, and educate staff and student learners as applicable.
- Participate in the education of residents and medical and nursing students and perform diagnostic and therapeutic procedures.
- Manage comprehensive and individualized care for patients and their families during inpatient hospitalization.
- Complete daily rounds, consultations, pre-procedure evaluations, and integrated assessments.
- Order additional tests or consultations in collaboration with neonatal faculty or according to established clinical guidelines and protocols.
- Perform and communicate results of diagnostic tests according to established clinical guidelines and scope of practice.
- Consult and communicate with hospital staff regarding abnormal patient evaluation findings.
- Perform comprehensive clinical evaluations and document findings in medical records.
- Facilitate patient discharge and follow-up by coordinating appropriate services and tests before discharge for outpatient clinic appointments.
- Perform necessary procedures according to established clinical guidelines, protocols, and scope of practice.
- Develop individualized plans of care for neonatal patients, including teaching, discharge planning, and referrals to other healthcare team members.
- Provide care for patients across the age continuum covered by the practitioner’s education and certification.
- Participate in physician and interdisciplinary team rounds as applicable.
- Participate in assigned flight or ground transport teams caring for neonates en route to the hospital for the highest level of neonatal critical care.
- Identify unstable or complex neonatal care situations and facilitate appropriate intervention in clinic or hospital settings.
- Recognize emergency situations and initiate effective emergency care.
- Evaluate neonatal patients and coordinate student medical and nursing education regarding management, procedures, and interpretation of diagnostic studies.
- Assist with collection of outcome measures as applicable.
- Apply critical thinking and diagnostic reasoning in clinical decision-making by identifying, evaluating, and managing individual patient and family needs.
- Use equipment safely.
- Base decisions and actions on relevant scientific principles, established standards of care, and research findings.
- Use teaching and learning theory and appropriate teaching strategies to educate nursing staff, hospital staff, students, patients, families, and the community.
- Promote an environment that facilitates learning by responding to patient and family preferences, patient-management priorities, and learning benchmarks.
- Evaluate the effectiveness of patient and family teaching and collaborate with nursing and clinical staff to complete education plans.
- Update professional knowledge throughout the year.
- Complete all identified clinical competencies.
- Serve as a resource for staff and student learners caring for neonatal patients.
- Provide educational programs to professional and paraprofessional personnel in the area of expertise.
- Mentor nursing personnel, medical and nursing learners, and student learners at all levels of clinical practice.
- Participate in community programs and distribute literature as appropriate within the area of expertise.
- Communicate with patients and families, physicians, interdisciplinary team members, medical and nursing learners, student learners, and ancillary services to ensure coordinated and efficient patient care.
- Document plans of care, interventions, and evaluations clearly and concisely in each patient’s medical record according to approved hospital and University Health Associates policies and compliance standards.

- Collaborate with leaders and staff to achieve patient-outcome-based improvements in care.
- Provide leadership in developing and implementing changes in neonatal practice for the interdisciplinary team and student learners that positively affect patient outcomes.
- Work collaboratively with medical and nursing staff to facilitate creative problem-solving and provide professional support.
- Participate in and initiate interdisciplinary approaches to patient care, program development, and education, and serve as a professional role model.
- Promote and practice innovation in the expanded role when delivering care to neonatal patients and families during inpatient hospitalization and in ambulatory settings.
- Participate in and provide leadership for education, committees, and task forces.
- Document hours and submit billing reports as appropriate.
- Participate in the WVUH/UHA Performance Improvement Plan.
- Apply information from performance-improvement activities and change practice as necessary to improve patient care.
- Review and interpret neonatal data from patient registries, clinical and financial reports, length of stay, access to care, and cost-per-case reports, and recommend or implement changes as necessary.
- Participate in clinical trials and research studies with the Principal Investigator.
- Assist faculty, administrators, and directors in collecting outcome measures.
- Perform other assigned duties and projects.
Desired Qualifications
- Neonatal intensive care unit, acute care, or pediatric experience is preferred.
- Neonatal Resuscitation Program certification.
- Neonatal Nurse Practitioner (NNP) or Acute Care Pediatric Nurse Practitioner (ACPNP) certification is preferred.
- A Master’s-level degree as a Physician Assistant is preferred.
