Requirements
  • High school graduation or equivalent and two years of chemical, clinical, or public health laboratory experience are required; equivalent education and/or experience may substitute except where legal requirements apply.
  • Medical Assistant – Phlebotomist certification with the Washington State Department of Health is required, or the certification must be obtained within 180 days of the start date.
Responsibilities
  • Perform stat and routine tests using kit assays and point-of-care devices, and accurately enter test results into the Laboratory Information System.
  • Perform quality control analyses on assigned tests and determine whether all parameters are within established ranges.
  • Perform routine quality monitoring of test systems and troubleshoot when necessary by consulting manufacturer manuals and division procedures and requesting guidance from the MLS or Lead.
  • Handle telephone inquiries from staff and providers appropriately and provide customer service.
  • Perform phlebotomy on adult and pediatric patients.
  • Interpret provider test orders; prioritize specimen handling based on specimen type and clinical urgency; monitor requisitions and labels for accuracy; and investigate and document errors and incomplete orders.
  • Prepare and process specimens for transport and testing, storing specimens under the optimal temperature conditions for the indicated tests.
  • Use laboratory information systems, including Sunquest and EPIC, to resolve issues and generate batch lists, pending logs, exception reports, and other documentation to track specimens within the Department.
  • Participate in training and demonstrate routine laboratory techniques to students and new employees.
  • Monitor laboratory inventory in the assigned work area, notify the lead when supplies are needed, and place orders when assigned.
  • Represent DLMP and UW Medicine in promoting the organizations’ mission, values, service excellence, and patient safety.
