About the Job

Requirements

  • A PhD in Behavioral Science, Health Psychology, Behavioral Medicine, Data Science, Machine Learning, or a closely related field is required, along with a strong publication track record demonstrating expertise in combining behavior change theory with closed-loop system design.
  • Advanced training or applied experience in causal inference, reinforcement learning, or a related quantitative discipline is required.
  • At least 5 years of experience in a senior behavioral science role combining intervention design or taxonomy/framework development with causal-inference or quantitative research.
  • Deep expertise in BCTTv1, COM-B, and related behavior change models.
  • Demonstrated expertise in causal inference, off-policy evaluation, and adaptive trial designs, with hands-on experience in Micro-Randomized Trials, Multi-Arm Bandits, and Reinforcement Learning algorithms in applied settings.
  • Experience with N-of-1 experimental designs, sequential decision-making, and within-person inference, including comfort with small-n, high-frequency behavioral data.
  • Ability to translate academic rigor into actionable, sprint-compatible deliverables while maintaining scientific integrity.
  • Ability to collaborate with engineering and machine learning teams on knowledge representation, taxonomy design, structured data schemas, and data instrumentation requirements.
  • Ability to write methodology and taxonomy specifications and review memos, and present complex statistical and behavioral concepts to technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Full-time commitment to a defined scope and timeline, with structured touchpoints across Engineering, ML, and BeSci teams.

Responsibilities

  • Design and build a structured behavioral taxonomy with the AI Team, defining behavioral targets, barrier profiles, behavior change technique mappings, and intervention modalities for machine-readable use in the recommendation system.
  • Translate BCTTv1, the COM-B framework, and relevant behavior change evidence into a practical classification system that Engineering and ML teams can operationalize.
  • Review intervention logic, behavior change technique-to-barrier mappings, and taxonomy edge cases, and flag deviations from the evidence base.
  • Evaluate evidence to distinguish well-supported, plausible, and speculative behavioral claims in the taxonomy.
  • Design and build the just-in-time adaptive intervention system with the AI Team, including decision logic for whether, what, and when to prompt users.
  • Specify system decision points and tailoring variables, including behavioral state, context, receptivity, and prior response history.
  • Translate behavior change evidence into decision rules that map tailoring-variable values to intervention options.
  • Define and maintain the taxonomy of prompts, nudges, and intervention modalities, with cadence, cooldown, and sequencing rules to reduce message fatigue and habituation.
  • Review decision-rule performance in production and identify deviations between real-world behavior and the evidence base.
  • Design the statistical and causal framework for the Learning Loop before product launch, including micro-randomization strategies, off-policy evaluation methods, and individual-level effect estimation.
  • Specify event logging and data infrastructure requirements with Engineering to support attribution and effect estimation before launch.
  • Design and advise on adaptive experimentation methodologies, including Multi-Arm Bandits, Micro-Randomized Trials, and contextual exploration strategies for within-person behavioral data.
  • Develop the analytical framework for N-of-1 self-experiments, including how individual-level effect estimates are computed, communicated, and updated.
  • Advise on population-level experiment design, including power, sample size, randomization, and the relationship between individual- and group-level inference.
  • Work with ML Engineers on recommendation and intervention system architecture, aligning taxonomy structure and causal-inference methodology with the system's technical architecture.
  • Advise on measurement design, study methodology, and intervention evaluation frameworks, and serve as an internal expert reference for the BeSci team.
  • Partner with the Behavioral Analyst to align the taxonomy and statistical learning framework with the behavioral theory driving intervention selection.

Desired Qualifications

  • Prior experience applying BCTTv1, COM-B, and related behavior change models to digital health or technology-mediated interventions is strongly preferred.
  • Experience in health technology, behavior change platforms, or consumer wearable/connected-device ecosystems is strongly preferred.

About the Company

Vesync

IoT platform for smart home devices

Vesync designs and sells small home appliances in the United States under three brands (Etekcity, Cosori, Levoit) and operates the VeSync app and a proprietary IoT platform. The products work by connecting devices to the VeSync mobile app and cloud, allowing users to control lights, air purifiers, sensors, and other gadgets from a single interface. Unlike some competitors that focus on a single brand or device type, Vesync combines multiple brands and hundreds of connected devices on one platform. Its goal is to provide a cohesive smart‑home experience by unifying device control and automation across its three brands.
