Requirements
- Graduate of Accredited Surgical Technologist First Assistant Program.
- First Assistant Certification required.
- Two years of cardiac surgery experience.
- Knowledge of cardiac surgery procedures pertaining to heart revascularization, valve repair/replacement, aortic dissection, and conduction system, equipment/instrument operation and care, and implant preparation.
- Knowledge of advanced anatomy and physiology.
- Knowledge of cardiopulmonary bypass.
- Knowledge of advanced sterile technique and asepsis.
- BCLS certification.
- Knowledge of medical ethics.
- Good vision, hearing and manual dexterity: ability to transfer patients safe from bed/stretcher to operating room table Technical Competencies: - Skin prep - Laser Safety - CPR PREFERRED:
Responsibilities
- Supports the cardiothoracic operating room under the direction or supervision of the cardiothoracic surgeon during surgical intervention.
- Acts as the cardiothoracic surgeon's assistant by applying traction or counter-traction as needed.
- Helps to maintain hemostasis during surgery and assists with wound closure at completion of surgical procedure.
- Demonstrates competencies for cardiothoracic surgical procedures, techniques, and equipment required for the cardiovascular operating room.
- Functions interdependently with the cardiovascular surgeon and applies knowledge, skill, and judgment necessary to assist the cardiovascular surgeon in performing a safe operation that yields optimal results for the patient.
- Performs various tasks and duties to provide technical assistance and support to medical/surgical staff and personnel during surgical procedures.
- May specialize in one or more services.
