Requirements
  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Four years of experience in Central Sterile Services is required.
  • Current certification as a Sterile Processing Technician through an accredited organization is required, such as CRCST (Certified Registered Central Service Technician), HSPA, or CBSPD (Certified Sterile Processing and Distribution Technician).
Responsibilities
  • Develop Sterile Processing educational programs covering proper decontamination, disinfection, and sterilization methods.
  • Collaborate with Sterile Processing Departments to ensure staff are properly trained and operate within applicable industry standards and regulations, including HSPA, CBSPD, AORN, The Joint Commission, FDA, CDC, OSHA, and AAMI.
  • Train staff and continuously assess skills and knowledge in decontamination, instrument tray assembly and storage, sterilization processes, and standard precautions; perform new-hire orientation.
  • Facilitate individual, team, and department performance management, including competency development and evaluation, change-management processes, work and accountability processes, performance consultation, staff mentoring, and development of job and performance aids.
  • Provide programs that support staff learning and adaptation as technology emerges and clinical practice evolves.
  • Perform proactive quality checks of instrument sets and case carts; collect and report data on tray errors and missing instruments to Sterile Processing leadership; and develop training to address identified gaps.
  • Perform retroactive quality checks; collect, track, research, resolve, and follow up with Sterile Processing leadership on instrumentation and supply data.
  • Work various shifts to perform quality checks and provide training to off-shift staff.
  • Develop a program to monitor and review biological control culturing procedures for sterilizers to ensure equipment operates according to standards.
  • Develop and maintain a tracking system for materials and equipment prepared and issued by Sterile Processing in the event of a recall.
  • Maintain liaison with operating-room managers and staff regarding tray rightsizing and proper techniques for processing trays in the operating room before decontamination.
  • Maintain documentation relating to safety, effectiveness, and cost in planning, delivering, and managing training and development activities.
  • Provide technical assistance to Sterile Processing staff assembling complex surgical instrument sets and to surgical technicians and other perioperative clinical staff regarding instrument-related issues.
  • Provide knowledge transfer and ongoing education for staff preparing for CBSPD or HSPA certifications.
  • Ensure resources are available for staff to maintain required continuing education units and keep certifications current.
  • Maintain documentation and records for team-member competencies in the Sterile Processing Department, including managers and supervisors; audit training records for compliance with governing guidelines.
  • Work with the Sterile Processing leadership team on clinical service-unit and departmental goals, policy and procedure development, and annual competencies; assist with data collection for performance-improvement initiatives.
  • Demonstrate compliance with patient-safety, risk-management, standard-precaution, and infection-control protocols.
  • Create a climate of innovation through role modeling, consultation, research, and facilitation of learning.
  • Perform other related duties incidental to the work described.
Desired Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in a healthcare-related field preferred.
  • Supervisory or educator-role experience preferred.
  • Certification in Healthcare Leadership (CHL) preferred.
