About the Job

Requirements

  • Expert programming skills in a systems programming language and a desire to produce high-quality code appropriate to a real-time environment.
  • Strong programming skills in one or more mainstream programming languages.
  • Experience with a systems programming language.
  • Interest in or experience with Rust.
  • Ability to work with rapidly evolving requirements.
  • Experience maintaining and producing high-quality code reviews and appropriate testing.
  • Desire to maximize impact through quick iteration and short cycles of learning and improvement.

Responsibilities

  • Work directly with experimental scientists to implement real-time control system behaviors and provide abstractions required for their experiments.
  • Develop abstractions over real-time control hardware to support a control system that repeatedly and reproducibly drives ions with nanosecond-level precision, while enabling fast iteration and system scaling.
  • Accelerate development of the science core and contribute to the core execution model of the quantum computers.
  • Collaborate with scientists to understand their requirements.
  • Interface with system orchestration, non-real-time control, and compiler teams to ensure integration with the wider software architecture.
  • Implement drivers for various real-time devices.
  • Produce tooling that enables users of the code to iterate rapidly and confidently.
  • Develop the execution environment for user programs running on the systems.
  • Continually improve the APIs used by internal users.

Desired Qualifications

  • Excellent communication skills within software and across disciplines.
  • Eagerness to learn and develop skills.

About the Company

IonQ

Trapped-ion quantum computing hardware and services

IonQ builds quantum computers using trapped-ion qubits and provides cloud access and on-premise systems (Forte and Tempo). It is expanding into quantum networking, secure communications, and sensing through acquisitions (Oxford Ionics, ID Quantique, Skyloom) and a SkyWater deal. Its customers include AWS Braket and the U.S. government, with revenue growth and a strong cash position to support expansion. The goal is to scale commercial quantum computing by creating a connected quantum ecosystem and broadening access beyond hardware.
