Requirements
  • Knowledge of driving rules and regulations and state and local laws and ordinances.
  • Ability to use a firearm.
  • Knowledge of modern law enforcement practices and procedures.
  • Possess and maintain a valid driver's license, vehicle registration, and access to dependable transportation; a satisfactory driving record is required.
  • Requires daily travel to locations that are not barrier free and the ability to lift or carry up to and in excess of 50 pounds.
  • Ability to crawl in small spaces and walk, run, and crouch for extended periods of time.
  • Required to receive preventative rabies shots or waive personal rights in the event of an animal attack.
  • Ability to work outdoors and under somewhat adverse conditions, including handling vicious and hurt animals.
  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Graduate of the Michigan Law Enforcement Officers Training Academy.
  • Previous experience as a law enforcement officer.
  • Employment is dependent on a background check, criminal history check, physical examination, comprehension exam, and drug screen.
  • Required to work evenings and weekends.
  • Ability to walk, stand, and run for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to work outdoors and under adverse conditions.
Responsibilities
  • Patrol designated areas to prevent, deter, and suppress traffic violations and criminal activity; enforce regulations and preserve public peace for Van Buren County residents.
  • Investigate criminal and traffic offenses in accordance with the Michigan Penal Code and traffic statutes, and apprehend violators.
  • Maintain contact with the Sheriff's Office, acknowledge receipt of dispatches, and respond to emergency situations.
  • Provide accurate information for the preparation of statistical reports and the prosecution of offenders.
  • Transport prisoners or mentally incapacitated persons to or from correctional facilities or government institutions.
  • Accompany inmates to court for arraignments, sentencing, and motions, and appear or testify in civil, criminal, or traffic litigation cases.
Desired Qualifications
  • Military experience preferred.
