How Generac drives backup power innovation for data centres.

How Generac drives backup power innovation for data centres. August 14, 2026 Generac has secured a global hyperscale supply deal and won Gold for its 3.25MW generator, driving backup power innovation across data centre resilience Generac has further cemented its position in the data centre power sector, landing a global supply agreement with a hyperscale operator while its largest diesel generator has secured industry recognition. The two developments point to a company shaping how mission-critical facilities plan for resilience as digital infrastructure expands. Hyperscale supply deal signals sector confidence. The energy technology company, based in Waukesha, Wisconsin, has signed a global supply agreement to provide backup power generators for a leading hyperscale data centre operator's infrastructure. The deal followed what Generac describes as a rigorous qualification process, including multiple factory visits, performance and quality system reviews and audits across its vendor base. Aaron Jagdfeld, Chairman, President and CEO of Generac, says the agreement reflects the trust hyperscale operators are placing in the company's engineering credentials. "This agreement positions Generac at the heart of supporting essential services and the digital economy," he explains. "The successful navigation of this approval process solidifies our position as a top-tier supplier of large megawatt backup power generators and reflects the kind of relationship we expect will grow as the digital economy continues to scale." For data centre operators, the significance lies in what sits behind that approval process. Banking, healthcare delivery and emergency response all depend on facilities staying online through grid disruptions and periods of high demand, and a supplier able to pass hyperscale-level scrutiny on factory audits and quality systems offers assurance as capacity commitments grow larger. Engineering culture underpins critical infrastructure push. Erik Wilde, EVP and President of Domestic Commercial & Industrial (C&I) at Generac, frames the agreement as validation of the company's broader approach. "Generac has been supporting mission-critical infrastructure for decades," he says. "Securing this agreement reflects our culture - an engineering-first organisation focused on backup power, with the service capabilities required to support critical infrastructure at scale." That culture is also visible in the recognition given to the SD3250, Generac's 3.25MW generator and its largest diesel unit, named Gold winner in the Power Generation & Electrical Infrastructure category of the 2026 Consulting-Specifying Engineer Product of the Year awards. The award is decided through a reader-driven vote among consulting-specifying engineers, meaning the judges are the professionals who design and deploy this equipment in the field. The SD3250 sits within a range of large diesel generators spanning 1.75MW to 3.25MW, built for data centres, healthcare and wider infrastructure. Manufacturing expansion supports global data centre demand. The award follows a run of strategic moves Generac has made to scale its Commercial & Industrial business, among them a collaboration with EPC Power to deliver fully integrated energy solutions for data centre applications and the acquisition of Enercon, which brings 50 years of expertise in generator enclosures and switchgear. Generac has paired these moves with expansion of manufacturing capacity at its Beaver Dam, Oshkosh and Sussex facilities in Wisconsin, alongside growth across APAC, Europe, the Middle East and Latin America, a geographic spread designed to support data centre growth with end-to-end solutions rather than isolated equipment sales. The hyperscale supply agreement and the CSE award arrived within a day of each other, giving Generac validation from an operator committing to years of supply and from the engineers who specify equipment for a living. Erik describes the win as particularly encouraging given who is doing the judging. "This award is especially meaningful because it comes directly from the engineers and professionals who design, specify and deploy power solutions in mission-critical environments," he says. "The SD3250 reflects our continued investment in delivering large-scale power solutions that meet the evolving needs of commercial and industrial customers and we're proud to see that work recognised by the specifying engineer community."
