Wells Fargo names Kleber Santos sole consumer bank chief as Van Beurden shifts to AI

Wells Fargo has named Kleber Santos sole chief executive of its consumer banking and lending business. Saul Van Beurden, formerly co-chief executive of that segment, moves to a full-time artificial intelligence (AI) role. Both appointments take effect immediately. Santos will oversee consumer deposits, credit cards, business banking, and auto lending. Van Beurden will focus on scaling AI adoption across the bank, including deepening its work with AI firms. "Kleber and Saul have built strong momentum in both areas, and having each focus fully on these priorities will help us accelerate that progress," chief executive Charlie Scharf said. Wells rose to No. 5 globally and No. 3 in the US on the Evident AI index for banks.

Wall Street fears AI agents will drain bank deposits, but analysts say risk is overdone

Wall Street fears AI agents could pull deposits from banks, but leading analysts and executives say the risk is overblown. Bank stocks have fallen since Meta Platforms launched its Muse personal agent on September 8: Bank of America is down 18%, Charles Schwab 14%, Wells Fargo 6%, and JPMorgan Chase 5%. Agents can compare yields and recommend options, which could erode the inertia that keeps customers' money in place. If deposits move, banks may have to pay more interest, squeezing profits. Analysts Mike Mayo and Gerard Cassidy say trust matters more to customers than slightly higher returns. A Deloitte survey found 72% of bank customers hesitate to share financial data with generative AI tools. Third-quarter earnings showed no clear shift in deposits.

Wells Fargo's four-part AI plan to transform the $2.3T bank

Wells Fargo is rethinking workflows across the bank to get real value from artificial intelligence (AI), said Faraz Shafiq, its head of AI products and solutions. Speaking at the Money20/20 conference in Las Vegas, he said the goal is to "fundamentally transform how our bank operates." The $2.3 trillion-asset bank rests its plan on four parts: a central team for governance and security with application teams owning specific uses; a focus on the highest impact cases; speed with guardrails; and training for its 197,000 employees. Shafiq said banker intelligence tools are lifting product sales rates by 40%. Virtual assistant Fargo has handled some 1 billion customer interactions.
