Requirements
  • This position requires a master's degree from an accredited institution in an appropriate area of specialization.
  • Experience operating a personal computer and proficiency with Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
  • Ability to think strategically and approach challenges with creativity.
  • A demonstrated track record of reliability, meeting goals, and holding oneself accountable.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and experience working effectively across teams.
  • Knowledge of theoretical models of college student development and students in transition.
  • Knowledge of advising theory and models of developmental advising.
  • Knowledge of state statutes and rules of higher education within the state of Florida.
  • Teaching skills or the ability to present material to an audience.
  • Coordination, planning, and organization skills.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Problem-solving and critical-thinking skills.
  • Ability to build positive rapport with a variety of constituents.
  • Ability to learn and use academic advising-related technology, such as Microsoft Office, Banner, Degree Works, Appointment Manager, and Florida Shines.
  • Ability to learn easily and disseminate detailed information.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively with others or in teams.
  • Ability to work with complex systems in a fast-paced and dynamic environment.
  • Ability to be flexible and adaptive in a changing environment.
Responsibilities
  • Provide guidance in academic and personal development in a collaborative and mentoring environment.
  • Foster interactions with students in a supportive atmosphere so students achieve self-sufficiency while implementing their educational goals to reach degree completion.
  • Provide one-on-one individualized advising and group advising to students within the College or Unit.
  • Develop student education plans for timely graduation.
  • Select appropriate courses for upcoming terms.
  • Review program requirements and prerequisites.
  • Review admission requirements for limited- and selective-access programs.
  • Assist students in understanding FGCU advising technology, including Degree Works.
  • Educate and guide students on how to find FGCU technology, including Gulfline, Canvas, Eagle Mail, and other resources.
  • Review alignment between student academic and career goals.
  • Assist students in understanding academic policies and procedures, including grade forgiveness, withdrawal deadlines, repeat rules, and other policies.
  • Prepare individual student materials for Eagle View Orientation.
  • Provide advising support for Eagle View Orientation.
  • Discuss extracurricular activities that foster personal development.
  • Inform students about campus resources and refer them to other campus departments or work with student success network members to support degree completion.
  • Request course evaluations and enter course exceptions into the system.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.
