Requirements
  • Advanced Practice Nurse candidates must have a Master’s degree or higher in Nursing.
  • Advanced Practice Nurse candidates must hold a Wisconsin RN License.
  • Advanced Practice Nurse candidates must hold a Wisconsin Advanced Practice Nurse Prescriber License.
  • Physician Assistant candidates must have a Bachelor’s degree or higher in Physician Assistant Studies.
  • Physician Assistant candidates must hold a Wisconsin Physician Assistant License.
  • Physician Assistant candidates must be certified by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants.
  • Candidates must have American Heart Association Basic Life Support certification and Drug Enforcement Administration credentials.
  • Candidates must attend required training and meet regulatory requirements of the privileging institution, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, and the Joint Commission.
  • Candidates must be able to work a rotating full-time schedule of approximately 40 hours per week, including evening, weekend, and holiday shifts.
Responsibilities
  • Provide initial and ongoing assessment and management of urgent internal medicine or critical care issues for inpatient hospitalist patients.
  • Admit patients to medical teams and provide on-call cross-coverage for patients admitted to the hospitalist service.
  • Provide direct patient care to a broad range of patients with acute and complex medical conditions in an inpatient hospital setting.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary health care teams in diagnosing and treating conditions requiring medical intervention.
  • Write accurate and timely progress notes, procedure notes, admission orders, transfer orders, and other required documentation.
  • Order, perform, and interpret screening and diagnostic procedures and tests, and communicate and document the results appropriately.
  • Perform procedures beyond core practice when identified by the Hospitalist Services and when appropriately trained and credentialed.
  • Facilitate communication with patients, families, and staff to promote continuity of care.
  • Evaluate patient quality outcomes through participation in developing quality indicators and outcomes dashboards.
  • Perform comprehensive histories and physical examinations and identify normal and abnormal physical, cognitive, and psychosocial findings.
  • Develop pharmaceutical and non-pharmaceutical treatment plans and monitor their effectiveness.
  • Educate, counsel, and assist patients and families regarding health problems, health maintenance, preventive behaviors, and treatment plans.
  • Document care in the electronic medical record and complete other necessary documents.
  • Collaborate with or consult physicians and other health care providers as appropriate.
  • Acquire current information and trends in the Physician Assistant and/or Nurse Practitioner fields through educational programs, in-services, professional associations, and current literature.
Desired Qualifications
  • Previous hospital medicine or inpatient experience is preferred.
  • Clinical rotations in internal medicine or hospitalist medicine are a plus.
  • Acute Care specialization is preferred for the Advanced Practice Nurse pathway; Adult or Family Nurse Practitioner candidates are considered.
