About the job

Requirements
  • At least 8 years of professional software or reliability engineering experience, with strong command of at least one major programming language; Java 17 or later is preferred, including concurrency, collections, and modern language features.
  • Ability to identify, quantify, and mitigate operational and technical risk in a regulated financial services environment.
  • Proven ability to coordinate stakeholders and drive resolution across geographically distributed technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Experience running highly available production environments, including service-level indicators and objectives, error budgets, on-call, incident command, and post-incident reviews.
  • Strong understanding of cloud infrastructure, including GCP or AWS, container orchestration with Kubernetes or Docker, and infrastructure as code.
  • Working knowledge of AI models and AI-assisted engineering tools, including governing agents, critically assessing their output, and maintaining quality over AI-generated work.
  • Experience building event-driven and distributed systems, including messaging platforms such as Apache Kafka, delivery guarantees, and resilience strategies.
  • Strong software development lifecycle and automation practices, including version control, continuous integration and delivery pipelines, automated build, test, and deployment workflows, and code quality tooling.
  • Solid observability discipline, including application instrumentation, distributed tracing, structured logging, and metrics-driven operations.
  • Ability to rapidly navigate, understand, and debug large unfamiliar codebases, with or without AI assistance.
Responsibilities
  • Design, build, and operate highly available, multi-region, cloud-native services with security and comprehensive observability, including metrics, distributed tracing, and structured logging, built in at every layer.
  • Establish and manage service-level indicators, service-level objectives, and error budgets; lead blameless post-incident reviews and translate findings into durable engineering improvements.
  • Lead incident response for latency-sensitive, high-throughput trade lifecycle systems by diagnosing issues, coordinating cross-functional responders, and communicating status to stakeholders.
  • Develop event-driven architectures, multi-stage processing pipelines, and optimized data paths for high-throughput trade lifecycle management.
  • Apply risk acumen to change management, capacity planning, and resilience testing, including chaos engineering, failover, and business continuity planning drills.
  • Partner with engineers, domain experts, and global stakeholders to understand production processes, challenge assumptions, and drive modernization in a cloud-centric, AI-driven environment.
  • Orchestrate AI agents across the software development lifecycle and operations to comprehend large codebases, generate production-quality automation, and accelerate delivery while maintaining quality.
  • Define and defend service-level objectives, error budgets, and reliability standards for critical trading services.
  • Identify systemic risks before they materialize, automate repetitive operational work, and strengthen platform resilience.
  • Coordinate incident response by mobilizing engineers, domain experts, and stakeholders across the global organization and communicating with technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Design and operate high-availability, multi-region, event-driven services on a modern cloud-native platform, setting reliability and architectural standards.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience with chaos engineering, capacity planning, load and performance testing, and production support in highly available, latency-sensitive environments.
  • Experience with Spring Boot, gRPC or Protocol Buffers, integration or orchestration frameworks such as Apache Camel or Spring Integration, and pipeline or adapter patterns including retries, dead-letter queues, and error isolation.
  • Experience with cloud platforms such as GCP or AWS, Kubernetes or Docker, JVM tuning for containerized workloads, and infrastructure as code tools such as Terraform or Helm.
  • Experience applying AI models to operational use cases such as anomaly detection, log analysis, automated remediation, and agentic operations.
  • Experience with Prometheus, Grafana, OpenTelemetry, and service-level objective tooling.
  • Experience with data modeling, SQL or NoSQL databases, caching strategies, and performance optimization in latency-sensitive systems.
  • Experience with enterprise security patterns, authentication protocols, mutual TLS, secrets management, and certificate rotation.
  • Experience in equities, post-trade, or financial services, including trade lifecycle concepts, position management, reconciliation, and multi-system migration environments.
  • Experience with asynchronous or non-blocking I/O frameworks such as Vert.x or Netty, multi-region or business continuity planning architectures, and open-source contributions.

About the company

Goldman Sachs advises companies and governments on mergers, raises money for them by selling their stocks and bonds, and trades securities for big investors such as hedge funds and pension funds. It led Ford Motor's 1956 stock market debut, then the largest share sale in US history. Traders buy and sell stocks, bonds, currencies, and commodities for clients and lend them money, while bankers earn a fee on each deal they advise on or arrange. Its asset and wealth management arm invests for institutions and wealthy families and charges fees based on the money it oversees. The firm was founded in 1869, when it began brokering short-term IOUs for New York merchants, and it is based in New York City.

Simplify's Take

What believers are saying

  • Trading drives the boom: stock-trading revenue hit a record $7.42 billion in the June 2026 quarter, up 72%.
  • Pay is climbing: compensation rose 20% to $11.5 billion in the first half of 2026, while staff grew 1%.
  • A Goldman stint opens doors: alumni Rishi Sunak, Mario Draghi and Mark Carney rose to lead Britain, Italy and Canada.

What critics are saying

  • AI is costing jobs: Goldman's October 2025 AI plan came with a "limited reduction in roles" and slower hiring.
  • Expect five office days a week: Goldman reaffirmed the rule in 2023, and its CEO calls remote work an aberration.
  • Stock awards have lost value: shares fell 23% from July 15 to October 8, 2026, versus 18% at Morgan Stanley.

What makes Goldman Sachs unique

  • Traders outearn Goldman's famous merger advisers: trading made 57% of first-half 2026 revenue, versus 8% from advice.
  • Goldman is Wall Street's top merger adviser: it earned $4.6 billion advising on 2025 deals, versus JPMorgan's $3.1 billion.
  • The top prize is still partner: though public since 1999, Goldman named just 95 partners from 46,000-plus staff in 2024.

Goldman Sachs boosts Quantum Development Finance facility to $889M

Goldman Sachs has committed up to an additional £500m to Quantum Development Finance, potentially expanding the specialist lender's funding capacity to £700m. The expanded long-term facility represents potential funding capacity rather than capital already advanced to borrowers. Quantum provides development and bridging finance to SME housebuilders and property investors across England and Wales, offering loans typically between £1m and £30m. The lender has financed approximately 4,000 homes since its 2023 founding and passed £1bn in cumulative funding during the summer. The commitment contrasts with pressure elsewhere in development finance, where firms face challenges from build-cost inflation and subdued markets. Quantum also partners with alternative investment manager AB CarVal for long-term funding.
