About the job

Requirements
  • Have 10 or more years of professional experience, including 3 or more years in a manufacturing leadership role and experience standing up and operationalizing a production facility.
  • Have taken complex electromechanical systems, especially those involving metal fabrication, rigging, or heavy machinery, from prototype to production.
  • Be familiar with Design for Manufacturing, Design for Assembly, and/or Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing principles, and have experience sourcing and qualifying suppliers and contract manufacturers.
  • Operate effectively in a fast-paced, in-person startup environment, with the ability to contribute hands-on while maintaining context of broader organizational goals.
  • Be based in or able to relocate to the San Francisco Bay Area and work 4–5 days per week from the San Leandro headquarters.
  • Be willing to travel approximately 20%, including to field deployments and the production facility.
Responsibilities
  • Build, lead, and grow a manufacturing team, and collaborate with company leadership to align manufacturing strategy with company goals and roadmap.
  • Operationalize the production facility end-to-end, including site readiness, equipment, workflows, safety, and staffing.
  • Build and maintain a manufacturing engineering organization in close coordination with design engineering to make headquarters builds, facility production, and field deployments efficient and continuously optimized for manufacturability.
  • Own the new product introduction process to ensure smooth handoffs from development into production.
  • Collaborate with supply chain to reduce cost of goods sold over time through Design for Manufacturing feedback, process optimization, and yield improvement.
  • Establish manufacturing processes, documentation, and organizational design, including bills of materials, drawings, part qualification, and supplier quality, and set standards across manufacturing activity.
  • Represent the manufacturing function to employees, customers, executives, and investors.
  • Own environmental, health, and safety compliance and safety culture at the production facility.
Desired Qualifications
  • Have a Bachelor's and/or Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or a related field.
  • Have experience in automation, robotics, or capital equipment manufacturing.
  • Have experience working with solar or construction industry technologies.
  • Be familiar with high-complexity, low-volume production environments.
  • Have used ION manufacturing software.

About the company

Charge Robotics builds robotic systems that automate solar installation work to remove labor bottlenecks in construction. Their robots handle tasks in the field to speed up the process of deploying solar projects, allowing construction teams to install more systems in less time. This focus on automation of on-site installation differentiates Charge Robotics from competitors that only provide components or software rather than end-to-end robotic labor solutions. The company’s goal is to help the world switch to renewable energy faster by making solar installation scalable and more efficient.

What believers are saying

  • Solar delivered 81% of new U.S. electric capacity in 2024, expanding demand sharply.
  • The $22 million round funds commercial launches and manufacturing scale after prototype validation.
  • Multiple factories per site compress schedules without adding labor, a compelling EPC value proposition.

What critics are saying

  • First commercial deployments still target late 2025; slippage signals product-market mismatch.
  • SOLV Energy remains the proof point; one customer leaves revenue concentration dangerously high.
  • If field uptime or installation economics disappoint, EPCs keep crews and Charge stalls permanently.

What makes Charge Robotics unique

  • Portable robotic factories assemble solar fields in 40-foot sections onsite, not offsite.
  • March 2025 SOLV Energy pilot proved automated installation on a working solar farm.
  • MIT founders Banks Hunter and Max Justicz focus narrowly on utility-scale solar labor.

Charge Robotics raises $22M to automate utility-scale solar farm construction

Charge Robotics, founded by MIT alumni Banks Hunter and Max Justicz, has raised $22 million to deploy its portable robotic factories for utility-scale solar farm assembly. The company plans to begin commercial installations later in 2025. The factories automate solar panel installation, which currently relies on manual labour. In early 2024, Charge deployed a prototype system with SOLV Energy, successfully building a working solar farm. The system works like a portable assembly line. Steel tracks, mounting brackets, and panels are loaded in, and the factory robotically assembles them into 40-foot sections. A robotic vehicle positions each completed bay in the field. Solar accounted for 81% of new US electric capacity added in 2024, but labour shortages constrain growth. Charge's system allows multiple factories to run simultaneously at sites, completing projects faster without expanding the workforce.
