About the company

Rivian designs and builds electric pickup trucks, SUVs, and delivery vans, pairing off-road ability with electronics and software it develops itself. In 2021, its R1T became the first fully electric pickup truck on the US consumer market, ahead of larger rivals such as Ford and Tesla. It makes the R1T pickup, the R1S and R2 SUVs, and commercial vans in Normal, Illinois, and sells them directly online and in its own stores rather than through dealers. Its vehicles run on Rivian's own software, which gains features through updates sent over the internet, and most revenue comes from vehicle sales, with service and optional software adding more. Rivian was founded in 2009 and is based in Irvine, California.

Rivian faces Volkswagen software doubts as it buys Third Dimension AI, with $20.6B revenue forecast by 2029

Rivian Automotive faces investor pressure after reports that Volkswagen may use Xpeng's China-developed software in its European EVs. Rivian and Volkswagen have a joint venture (JV), so the shift could affect Rivian's software licensing hopes. Rivian has also bought Third Dimension AI, which adds 3D simulation technology for validating self-driving systems. The company plans supervised point-to-point driving by late 2026 and an Autonomy Plus rollout across its fleet in 2027. Analysts forecast revenue of $20.6 billion and earnings of $736.4 million by 2029, against a current loss of $3.2 billion. Liquidity pressure from high research and plant spending remains the main risk. Rivian's third-quarter update on October 29 is the next key checkpoint.

Rivian Q3 preview: $2B revenue expected as R2 ramp drives deliveries, but losses persist

Rivian will report third-quarter 2026 results on Thursday after the closing bell. Analysts expect a loss of 65 cents per share, 4.3% narrower than a year earlier, on revenue of about $2 billion, up 30%. The electric vehicle maker delivered 19,248 vehicles in the quarter, up 45.8% year over year and above Wall Street's estimate of 18,000. The R2, a smaller and cheaper SUV that reached customers in June, drove the rise. Management expects the R2 ramp to weigh on automotive gross profit again before scale benefits arrive in the fourth quarter. Rivian reaffirmed its 2026 target of 65,000 to 70,000 deliveries. Volkswagen recently provided a $1 billion loan at a fixed 6.03% for 10 years. Rivian shares have fallen 42% this year.

Rivian acquires UK AI startup Third Dimension to advance autonomous driving.

Rivian acquires UK AI startup Third Dimension to advance autonomous driving. The acquisition adds AI-powered 3D simulation technology to Rivian's autonomy team, supporting driver-assistance development and planned driverless R2 vehicles for Uber. Prefer on Google Discover more electric vehicle (EV electric vehicles Compare EV Models Rivian has acquired Third Dimension, a 15-person UK startup that uses artificial intelligence to transform images and video into realistic 3D environments. The startup's team will join Rivian's autonomy and AI group to support driver-assistance development and autonomous driving systems, including technology for planned robotaxis based on Rivian's R2 platform that the company intends to supply to Uber. AI-Powered simulation for autonomous driving. Founded in 2024 by CEO Tolga Kart and Piotr Sokólski, Third Dimension raised $7 million in seed funding and initially developed its technology to accelerate video game production. Rivian plans to apply the technology to automotive simulation rather than gaming. The system will convert real-world driving data collected by Rivian vehicles into simulated environments for training and validating autonomous driving systems. These simulations could help engineers recreate difficult road conditions and unusual driving scenarios without waiting for them to occur naturally. James Philbin, Rivian's vice president of autonomy and AI, told TechCrunch that the company receives more than 400,000 uploaded sequences daily from R1T and R1S vehicles, R2 vehicles and delivery vans whose owners have enabled external camera sharing. The data is aggregated and anonymized. Discover more electric vehicle Compare Cars More realistic testing environments. Traditional autonomous driving simulators often rely on game engines and synthetic data, which can struggle to reproduce the complexity of real-world road conditions. Third Dimension's technology is designed to generate simulations that more closely reflect physical environments. Rivian expects this approach to help engineers test systems against rare or challenging situations at scale, improving development and validation processes. For autonomous vehicles, such testing is particularly important because unusual road events may be difficult to encounter consistently during real-world driving. Supporting Rivian's Uber robotaxi plans. The acquisition comes as Rivian develops autonomous driving capabilities for its vehicles and prepares to supply driverless R2 vehicles for Uber's planned robotaxi operations. Simulation technology could allow Rivian to evaluate autonomous systems against a broader range of scenarios before deploying vehicles with passengers. The technology may also support the development of driver-assistance features for Rivian customers. The deal also expands Rivian's presence in the UK, where most of Third Dimension's team is based, and creates an opportunity to grow the company's London AI hub. Financial terms of the acquisition were not disclosed. Discover more
