About the job

Requirements
  • Six to ten or more years of product experience at startups or building new product initiatives.
  • Experience in an early-stage environment, personally shipping products and moving quickly.
  • Zero-to-one experience taking a product from inception to launch or identifying and pursuing new opportunities.
  • Experience in government or another highly regulated environment.
  • Customer-embedded experience, such as forward-deployed product management, solutions product management, implementation, or founder-led delivery.
  • Hands-on user research experience, including designing and conducting discovery and translating findings into product decisions.
  • Technical depth sufficient to work comfortably with engineers and discuss application programming interfaces, services, and system design; engineering experience is not required.
  • Comfort working with ambiguity, a broad scope, and shifting priorities.
  • Ability to engage credibly with executive-level stakeholders, including agency directors, university chancellors, and institutional partners.
  • Must be based in the United States and willing to engage directly with state government partners.
Responsibilities
  • Work directly with state government partners through discovery, architecture, and design.

  • Identify the underlying problems customers are trying to solve beyond their stated requirements.
  • Act as a trusted product advisor to public-sector stakeholders.
  • Own the end-to-end product picture across statewide wallets, citizen-facing portals, and underlying application programming interfaces and services.
  • Help partners shape roadmaps and priorities, ensuring what is built solves the actual problem.
  • Partner with engineering, design, and delivery leads from product definition through deployment.
  • Design and conduct user research with users, stakeholders, and end users; conduct discovery and prototype where appropriate.
  • Synthesize research findings and translate them into product decisions and roadmap direction.
  • Bring user evidence into discussions where requirements are often treated as fixed.
  • Navigate government relationships thoughtfully while introducing evidence that may challenge stated priorities.
  • Influence direction while maintaining customer relationships, and communicate across user needs, policy, technical constraints, and business priorities.
  • Identify patterns across customers, connect customer needs to reusable product capabilities, and shape product strategy based on evidence rather than incoming requests.
  • Put work in front of small pilot groups early and use findings to redirect the roadmap.
  • Define and defend limits on iteration related to security, accessibility, and reliability with engineers and customers.
  • Drive digital credential adoption by onboarding issuers, verifiers, and institutional partners.
  • Identify high-leverage partnerships, including university research programs, workforce boards, and employer networks.
  • Own adoption key performance indicators and find resourceful ways to improve them.
  • Advise executive stakeholders, including agency directors, university leaders, and ecosystem partners.
Desired Qualifications
  • Meaningful experience in education, workforce development, or adjacent sectors.
  • Background in digital identity, identity and access management, identity, credential, and access management, credentialing, or authentication systems.
  • Familiarity with accessibility standards, FedRAMP, or National Institute of Standards and Technology frameworks.
  • Experience navigating public-sector procurement and contracting environments.
  • Prior engineering or deeply technical systems experience.
  • Experience building or growing multi-sided ecosystems, marketplaces, or platform adoption.
  • Background in education technology, learning and employment records, or workforce development programs.

About the company

SpruceID builds a platform to manage digital credentials across their entire lifecycle for organizations. Its main product, SpruceKit, lets any application add decentralized identity capabilities so the app and its users can issue, store, and verify digital credentials, such as mobile driver's licenses and professional certifications. The system relies on cryptographic signing and decentralized key management to enable trusted, verifiable identities. SpruceID differentiates itself by offering an open-source solution (SpruceKit and components under Apache 2.0 or MIT licenses), providing transparency and easy integration for developers. This open approach, combined with a focus on decentralized identity and support for mDLs, targets government entities, professional organizations, and businesses that need secure digital identification. The goal is to make secure, interoperable digital credentials widely available and easy to deploy for a broad range of use cases.

What believers are saying

  • California expanded mDL eligibility to 19 million residents in July 2026.
  • SpruceID still shipped developer updates in November 2025 and April 2025, signaling active product velocity.
  • OpenAge collaboration positions SpruceID for age-verification deployments across wallets in 2026.

What critics are saying

  • Apple Wallet and Google Wallet commoditize mDL distribution, squeezing SpruceID's wallet layer.
  • SpruceID depends on California DMV expansion; one state contract concentration creates revenue fragility.
  • OpenAge and other standards-driven rivals can bypass SpruceID if governments adopt generic protocols.

What makes SpruceID unique

  • California DMV chose SpruceID for mDL issuance, proving regulated-government credibility.
  • SpruceKit combines issuance, wallet, verification, and revocation across the credential lifecycle.
  • Open-source SDKs on Rust, iOS, and Android reduce integration friction for developers.

Come Si Evolverà L’Identità Digitale E Quali Startup Tenere D’Occhio Per Restare Aggiornati
