About the job

Requirements
  • At least 7 years of professional engineering experience, including at least 1 year of hands-on experience building agentic systems in production.
  • Experience with at least one modern agentic systems stack, such as LangGraph, the Anthropic SDK or Claude Agent SDK, OpenAI Agents SDK, Pydantic-AI, Mastra, LlamaIndex, CrewAI, or a comparable homegrown stack.
  • Strong Python familiarity and experience with one typed language for production services, such as TypeScript or Go.
  • Cloud experience with AWS or GCP and containerized deployment.
  • A senior- or staff-level software engineering foundation, formal or autodidact, with several years of production-environment experience and a track record of leading systems to launch.
  • Multiple shipped LLM-powered features in production, with the ability to explain failures, fixes, and lessons learned.
  • Practical knowledge of agentic patterns including ReAct, structured-schema tool use, prompt chaining, routing, orchestrator-workers, evaluator-optimizer or reflection, and human-in-the-loop systems.
  • Production retrieval experience with chunking, embeddings, hybrid search, re-ranking, metadata filtering, and their failure modes.
  • Working knowledge of grounding techniques including citation and quote extraction, faithfulness and refusal evaluations, and post-hoc consistency checks.
  • Strong prompt-engineering practice with zero-shot, few-shot, and many-shot patterns, example selection and ordering, in-context learning, and chain-of-thought.
  • Production experience with structured output and validation using provider-native structured outputs, Instructor, Pydantic-AI, Outlines, or a comparable approach.
  • Disciplined evaluation practice that does not rely solely on subjective review to determine readiness.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including explaining architectural trade-offs to executives and junior engineers.
  • Comfort using AI coding tools heavily while owning problem framing, design choices, and verification.
Responsibilities
  • Design and build production agentic systems and workflows that solve defined problems end to end.
  • Own prompts, tools, retrieval, guardrails, observability, cost budgets, latency budgets, and rollout for delivered systems.
  • Identify high-leverage operational toil and partner with subject-matter experts to define success criteria, validate outputs, and automate meaningful portions of workflows with trusted AI systems.
  • Build offline evaluations, calibrated large-language-model-as-judge evaluations, regression suites, and online metrics.
  • Maintain versioned, decontaminated golden datasets covering intents, difficulty levels, edge cases, and adversarial inputs, and enrich them with production failures and subject-matter-expert-validated labels.
  • Design AI features for applicable compliance frameworks such as COPPA and FERPA.
  • Run safety and bias evaluations before launch and continuously afterward.
  • Build human-in-the-loop and content-filtering controls before AI features reach end users.
  • Hand off production features with documentation, runbooks, evaluation harnesses, and dashboards.
  • Embed with receiving teams for typically 4 to 12 weeks and ensure they can ship system changes independently.
  • Create internal libraries, patterns, and playbooks that enable other engineering teams to ship AI features without direct involvement.
  • Participate in an AI-assisted coding interview session using AI tools to solve a realistic problem while validating outputs and producing production-standard code.
Desired Qualifications
  • Advanced retrieval experience with GraphRAG, agentic retrieval, evaluation-driven retrieval tuning, and hybrid retrieval at scale.
  • Experience with safety, privacy, and policy constraints in user-facing AI.
  • K-12 or other regulated-domain experience.
  • Experience with prompt-optimization frameworks such as DSPy, TEXTGRAD, or AdalFlow in production.
  • A public repository, package, gist, or technical write-up demonstrating meaningful AI work.
  • Open-source contributions to AI tooling, including frameworks, agents, evaluations, or MCP servers.

Simplify's Take

What believers are saying

  • Its 2026 pilot plan gives a concrete near-term validation window.
  • Recent hiring in math, product, and AI signals active product buildout.
  • Austin-based recruiting and in-house PR investment suggest management is preparing for launch.

What critics are saying

  • Level has no public funding, pilots, or revenue, so runway looks unproven.
  • The company is still in active development, with pilots only scheduled for 2026.
  • Without school-district adoption, Level becomes another K-8 edtech product lost to incumbents.

What makes Level unique

  • Level is building K-8 adaptive learning around learning science and game systems.
  • It targets students, educators, and parents with one integrated workflow.
  • It is partnering with educators before launch, not shipping a generic content library.
